The excerpt from Blood Dawn grabbed me right from the first chapter through to the end. This is epic fantasy at its finest, and it deserves a place on any bookshelf, where it'd be right at home next to other great tales in that genre, such as The Death Gate Cycle, the early books of The Wheel of Time, and The Phoenix Guards. Can't wait to get my hands on it!

The style and atmosphere of John Robin's Blood Dawn reminds me of some of my most favorite worlds I had ever experienced throughout all my years of gaming and reading. An infinitely dark setting, a buried past, an unexpected connection to lost power... Rena is the only light in Robin's unique world that can cast out the oppressive darkness. While the world and characters have me hooked and eager beyond measure to read more, seeing that John Robin is a master of the written word who knows exactly how to frame a scene and tell a story has me excited as well. Give this story, give this writer, your undivided attention. You will not be disappointed.

I greatly enjoyed the rich narrative style from the first two chapters of Blood Dawn. John Robin paints a detailed portrait of a world laced with intrigue, politics and what hints at a unique history. I'm particularly fond of the forbidden nature of art and how this will figure into the story. That the chosen art of the main character is something a little out of left field for our contemporary sensibilities gives the story even more character and the descriptions of weaving take the reader to a different world, truly immersing the reader in how she feels.

The writing and structure are reminiscent of Dune in the very best ways, beginning with the beautiful contextual marker of a quote from "reflections on weaving from a Lividian scroll". We know exactly what sort of story we're entering when we read that quote, and we know we'll be in good hands throughout the journey. The writing is confident and the world of the book is layered and nuanced so that it stays with you after you finish reading a chapter so that you want to read more. Excellent start.

John has wove an intricate web of fantasy that brings out the best from his world. ... It's an intuitive read written in such a way it brings out the best in his writing.
