Epic. It's a word that gets thrown around too easily, these days. To the point where it has lost its meaning ... but if you want to know what it really means, you have to read Blood Dawn. I'm surprised Mr. Robin's middle initials aren't "R.R." because he is the heir apparent to master fantasy craftsmen Tolkien and Martin, with greater focus. If you didn't enjoy Tolkien's plot-irrelevant meanderings or find fault with Martin for his tardy manuscript deliveries -- but you love the idea of being absorbed into a fantastic world that transports you away from the banal realities of everyday life -- read this tale.

I am very impressed with this. The first chapter hooked me in straight away, the writing is really good (it seems to me to have the right balance - elegant, with just a hint of the poetic, without being too sort of florid and without getting in the way of the storytelling), and the world building seems impressive from what I’ve seen of it. Am very much hoping this reaches the funding goal, as I am excited to read the rest of it!

Blood Dawn, written by John Robin, has all the makings of not only a good novel, but a GREAT one. His writing is eloquent, and detailed, and his characters, within mere pages, imply they have lived through decades of history only hinted at so far. The world-building is excellent, and never does it threaten to bog down the actual story. I will continue to follow his work, and look forward to reading more. I highly recommend the book to everyone.

What draws me to this project and this book - more than just the excellent writing and thoughtful presentation of the campaign page -- is the feeling of immense depth to the world. John has made it abundantly clear that he has given exhaustive thought the intricacies of his world, to how every moving part works together. Rena's plot is a gimme for genre-wonks like me - especially when you slather the 'art is magic' sauce over the hero's journey. But what will keep me and other readers truly spellbound will be the texture - the waft and woof of the tapestry, if I'm using those terms correctly? I'm most impressed by it because I tend to be a sketcher with world building - John is an architecht and I cannot wait to wander around this world he's built.
