Thomas J. Arnold liked an update for Analog OWL

Hello fellow path walkers,

I have an update for you with some good and some sad news.

Sad news first. I know you pre-ordered the 'hardback' copy, but I'm sorry to say you won't be receiving it, as I've 'downgraded' the publishing run to a paperback.  My reason for doing this is that I feel it will give us a better chance of actually meeting the publishing goals required.  You see, after the recent update to the funding model, the pre-order price shot up to $30.  Since then I've had no orders. Co-incidence?  I'm not sure, but on my request, the kind folk at Inkshares have downgraded the publishing model to paperback (and thus lowered the price to $20) which hopefully will start up more pre-orders and in turn we'll reach the targets, I hope.

But cry not, as I promise to make it up to all of you who have  already pre-ordered. For those of you who are Branch Choosers I am going to write you all into the novel as minor walk on characters.  I will be using your real names, unless you contact me and ask me not to, then I will use an alternative name that we both agree on.  And for the rest of you fine readers, not only will you receive a signed copy of the paperback, but I will also ensure you get something extra too, as well as my eternal thanks and extra special man hugs.

Also, I hereby promise that if there is ever a hardback print run I will personally ensure you all get a free copy. Woop! Double joy joy!

Now for the good news... I am writing. Yes I know, that's to be expected by now, but I am in the middle of the outline and the story is evolving each day, with the back stores and connections becoming more complex and richer.  I don't know about you guys, but I used to write from the beginning and then stall, run out of steam, come up against a brick wall and simply give up after a chapter or two... or after 50,000 words... however, I realised that I can get the wind up, refill the kettle and pole vault over the hurdles if I have a structure to work from, a scaffold within which to build.  So, my plan is to aim for thirty chapters (with a prologue and epilogue) and in order to do that I will need to sketch out at least 120 scenes, from which I will edit down into a core sixty or so.  This will form the story outline form which the chapters will be born.

Now for the secret secret that you readers get to see first... there is a reality within the mythology of the book called the Origin.  Within it the whole global society is aware that there are other realities and that they are the original timeline.  Where everyone strives to make all the right choices first time and everyone is healthy and happy. It's where the best ideas from every other reality end up.  A proverbial heaven on earth.  In fact, it's the timeline where the multiverse was first discovered and which lead to the pioneers controlling their conciousness's and moving them across into other worlds, returning with their observations.  It is utopia.

What would you think if you lived in a world like that? What would you do to get to live that life?  More importantly, what would you do to ensure the lives of everyone were kept perfect? What should you do to protect it? How far would you go?

Exiting stuff!

Cheerio for now path walkers... and stop staring in the mirror, at least not into your own eyes...

James

Thomas J. Arnold liked an update for Ghosts of War

    Greetings good people.

It's been a busy week so I'll keep this update short.

Campaign - The new Inkshares model switched over at the start of the month, so it's now official: Ghosts of War is getting published. We've cleared the light publishing goal, so the next target is 750 copies. I realise with the price increases that it's going to be quite a task to get there in the next 44 days, but stay tuned, there might be a small bit of relief coming on that front in the next week or so.

Ghosts & NaNoWriMo - I'm participating in NaNo this year and using it to finish up Ghosts, plan out the sequels and maybe even make a start on book two if there's time. I'm currently closing in on 8,000 words written in 6 days, so I'm about 2,000 words off the pace, but there's plenty of time to make it up.

In closing, here's a behind the scenes look at me working during the month of November.

Thomas J. Arnold liked an update for A Distant State

I hate to say it, but pretty sure that A Distant State isn't going to reach its goal. It was a nice dream and I do appreciate the support that I have had so far in this journey. It seems like crowdsourcing just won't cut it for this project. No worries, I'm still moving forward.

I posted an update on the Facebook page that I set up for A Distant State that I'll paste here:

Six days into National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) and I'm ahead of goal so far. Material has been flowing with no struggles. After reviewing the already written parts prior to November 1st, I decided to rework the previous chapters 16, 17 and 18. Now that I am 11,000 words in and I just finished the re-writing of Chapter 18, which took the closure out that I had previously written to allow the novel to have more material. The next 39,000 words will be telling more of the story of the passengers onboard the Libertad.

Other notes on the progress, I received the Chapter 2 edits back from the editor (Thanks, Mom!) and will be making those changes and sending Chapter 3 Dylan-edit draft to the editor in December.

Thanks for sticking with me. Things are coming together and come December, full editing takes place on the complete novel.

You can find the facebook page at this link: https://www.facebook.com/adistantstate/ to stay up to date with my last postings, leave me some feedback, and stay abreast on the latest news.

        Uhhh...spoilers, I guess?

I'm poking and prodding the Inkshares site with new text and layout - please give it a look and let me know what you think! Same goes for my personal site - Spell-sword.com. I'm hoping to be able to show you the fancy-schmancy new cover in the next few days - and with that will come new people curious about the book. This goes along with my Pan-Social Platform Clean-Up Regimen -- time to hide all that moogle fanfiction, I suppose. Please let me know what you think will help other people get interested in AMOD - as I finish up the copy edits in the next few weeks, I need to refocus my attention to the Marketing Cannon. Oh, how it gleams...

I haven't said this explicitly in a while - but thank you. This has been an exciting week - in between stresses of Dev Edits and the oncoming Copy Edits - working on the final cover, starting to lay down early work on the marketing strategy - I feel like a BIG BOY WRITER. And it's all thanks to you.  So thanks, you weirdos.

          I MISSED MUSEDAY I'M SORRY

I need to make you a mix for Tom and Hope next; these are characters you haven't met yet. They're Earthan and ridiculously awesome. You're going to love them.

Tom is an alien conspiracy theorist who mostly goes around debunking other people's stupid theories and pissing everyone off, and Hope is a Homeland Security Agent who kicks a LOT of ass (even though she can't stop spilling food on herself).

In the meantime, here's an update snapshot of that poster I'm making:

Just one more character to add... who will it be???

          Upcoming events:

Don't forget to come to my reading at the Acadia Cafe this Sunday for the MN Speculative Fiction Writers 2015 Local Author Showcase at 3pm!

We're going to get a better recording of this reading than the one last week (I'm still debating posting a link to that one; the audio's not great).

(Ok FINE, if you want to see what was inspiring me yesterday, it's just this song over and over. I listened to it about, oh, 90 times, and now I have a plan for several key scenes in books 2 and 3. Somebody's gonna betraaaaaaaay someoooooone...)

          :)

Thomas J. Arnold liked an update for Metal Heart

"Metal Heart" is still circulating in copyright hell, but to kill the time between making the book legally mine and getting published, I've decided to tackle another beast - Nanowrimo 2015.

Yes - the first draft of the second book in the trilogy is well underway and more than halfway finished, so putting a measly 50,000 words to the page is nothing, right?

I've logged about 3k words in the last two days and plan to net about 1,500 words a days to achieve my goal of a completed draft by the end of the month. I'll keep everyone updated here as the goal gets closer.

Thanks for sticking around! We might not make publication in this first round, but I'm still very excited to see what the future holds.
