Brien Shores sent an update for I Think You Dropped This

Hello all,

It’s been about 9 months since I’ve sent one of these out and that was largely due to my previous funding not going so well.  Depending on how you look at it anyway.  Yes my book didn’t hit it’s goal, which wasn’t awesome but was easy to make peace with.  It started out not published and ended similarly.  Still not published but it had grown more of an audience than it ever would have sitting on my hard drive collecting digital dust.  What I came out of it with was a group of talented new friends that I wouldn’t have known otherwise.  They are a great group of people from a very welcoming community.  I am proud of their successes and appreciate all the support they’ve given to me and many others.
It is because of this community and their support that I have decided to put my book back up for funding again.  I honestly have hopes but no expectations.  I set the funding up for a year because I noticed that the interest came in spurts and this would allow for people to find it at their own pace.  Already the campaign is going well at less than a day in.  Rick, Amanda, James, Joseph and Kendra have been great and helping that along.  This time around I want this to be pressure free.  If you preordered last time then that makes you awesome but there is no obligation to do it again, you are still awesome.  It would be great if you did order again but just knowing that you believed in it is great too.  Thanks for following along and supporting me and this project.

Cheers,

Brien

This is a good point sir. Truthfully I haven’t been to a ren-fair so I pictured him in just a t-shirt but I like the idea of him being way too into it.  I should check out a Ren-fair this summer.

What at first appears to be the ramblings of a madman with a stack of blank pages turns out to be the memoirs of a time traveler. Hold on... Am I talking about Adam, the unreliable narrator of "I Think You Dropped This", or  Brien Shores, the brilliant author himself? All I can say for sure is that when you read Shores' mind-bender of an opening chapter, you'll find that escaping from the surreal vortex becomes quite the impossibility. Best if you just hunker down on a rock and stay away from the tides... I think...?

What works best about the excerpt is that you've created a narrator who is halfway between lucid and rambling. It's entertainingly dry, but you still have to pay attention to keep up with what's going on. It also starts in a curious position that opens the door to a lot of questions and starts the imagination. On the critical side:1. It might use with more scenic description to better explain where Adam is at the outset. 2. It might be asking too much of a first chapter, but it's still unclear what the character wants, if anything. What I like most about the writing style also makes it difficult to criticize in traditional terms. I kept wondering why these particular diversions were part of the narrative. Can they serve a purpose beyond just being funny/quirky? Are they building to something bigger than themselves? If so, that's fantastic. It's hard to know whether that's the case after only reading this short sample. If the author is already doing that, that's awesome. If not, it may be something to consider. All in all, really strong, fascinating work that has a ton of potential.
