Hello gentle readers.

The number one Inari related news item for this week is that I have uploaded a holding cover for A Day in the Lies of Inari Meiwaku to Inkshares. This is based on a photo of a shrine to the real Inari in Kyoto, Japan taken by me so no copyright issues to worry about. Perhaps Inarie Meiwaku could have posed for this very statue! I’m expecting to replace this cover with a picture of Inari in, mostly, human form done by an artist friend of mine that will give the book a more Urban Fantasy feel than the current cover. 

In the meantime I think it looks quite pretty. Let me know your thoughts!

In writing news I’m onto Chapter 4 which gives a little more information about Inari’s life in London and explains how she was recruited by the organisation she calls MI13. 

I’m also trying to answer a couple more questions in order to get the narrative right. 

First, what could you buy in a supermarket that owls would like to eat? 

Second, what spirits would you meet in a court populated by the ghosts of dead places and structures from British history? So far I have previous incarnations of London Bridge, the ghost of the Great Exhibition and the ghost of old Sarum.

    When You Believe

    Aside from hustling people to pre-order The Slave Prince, I’ve been cleaning up the manuscript. There were a few minor additions, as I solidified the mechanics and evolution of magic. There were a few cuts to bury the plot holes I came across. Being that the first draft was written 3 years ago, I also stumbled upon a few elements in the book with no recollection of incorporating. And here’s the crazy part. While doing my runs of fact and metaphor checking, I found myself gaping at my Google search results. 

    To not spoil anything, I would just say that there were a handful of metaphors I came across that weren’t placed on purpose. As I ran the edits, every new addition and subtraction pulled them together. They fitted like jigsaw pieces I never knew could fit. Some might say they’re all coincidences, but... I personally like to believe otherwise.

    In my final clean up, amidst all the unravelling, I was reminded of a childhood song that always made the playlist on family karaoke nights. Everything about the song reflects my book and my personal journey with it. Of course, one can expect parallels. After all, ’When You Believe’ was the theme song of Prince of Egypt. But despite knowing the original tale, it didn’t dawn upon me that the foundation of the story was ’Believe’. Sure, I wrote about it. But I didn’t believe in the believe I wrote about. 

    However, it is now safe to say that I do. With the manuscript cleaned and polished, I fully believe. I believe that no matter what happens, I’ve experienced something valuable. Nothing can replace this journey of grasping the power of believe. And whatever the future holds, I know there can be miracles... when I believe.

      So I know I’ve been saying how excited I am to have finally hit Quill and to know that my book will be in the hands of actual people sometime in the near future. But, honestly, I don’t think it hit me until today.

      On the way home from work I had to pull over because I was suddenly, intensely aware of how much work it has taken to come this far. I saw every word I wrote, erased, re-wrote, re-erased, and re-re-wrote. Every character I sketched into notebooks and introduced to paper, as ready to tell their story as a child on the first day of school. I saw every excited key stroke as I experienced new events and people that screamed at me to make them real. I saw every moment of anticipation as I waited for my betas to respond. A thousand smiles when they praised something they liked or offered advice to make the story better. Every bit of terror as I wrote out queries, and more anticipation as I waited for a response. I re-experienced each and every time my heart dropped into my stomach at an agent’s rejection. And another. And another. The determined flits of my fingers as I turned each letter into a different origami animal to add to the ever-growing zoo. I felt that tiny spark of hope that glimmered when someone finally told me what was wrong with the original manuscript. Too long. Too long. The fevered dash to correct the issue-- erasing entire chapters, people, subplots. The tearful goodbyes as I deleted entire lives so that the others might have a fighting chance. The uncertainty of trying a less-than-traditional publisher. The soul-crushing doubt for each day I didn’t get a single pre-order. The amazement each time I did.

      And it all brought me to... this. Laughing and sobbing on the side of the road, tears streaking my face even as my cheeks hurt from smiling. Amazed and relieved and humbled all at once.

      It’s indescribable. Thank you.

        Good Morning Sweethearts!

        I hope that you all are doing well and that you’re having a lovely Friday! The last two weeks since the book has launched has been such a dream. I have been so touched that so many of you have texted or emailed me pictures of the books as they arrived at your homes, sent me photos of your children with the books, and also have given me your feedback on "How to Get Run Over by a Truck" It has been so wonderful to hear from you, and I am incredibly grateful to you for sharing your experience with me! 

        A few really wonderful things have happened that I wanted to share with you! I have done a couple of interviews about the book, and about my experience that I wanted to share with you. 

        In this interview I spoke about the day of the accident, and what it is like to be aware of the fact that you might lose your life in this Arrvls Podcast entitled "40 Blinks" 

        I spoke with Brooklyn Paper Radio about being a cyclist in Brooklyn, about what happened to the Truck driver, and they also asked me some tough questions about Warren. It was awesome and overwhelming all at the same time!  

        I also spoke with my best friend Leah Bonvissuto on this Storycorp interview, where we talked about how important it is to use your voice and to tell your story. It was an incredible interview with one of my favorite people in the world! 

        There was also some buzz about the book recently, which was unexpected and amazing! Jaime King, the beautiful and talented actress sent out an Instagram picture of the books that she’s reading right now to her 1 million followers, and "How to Get Run Over by a Truck" was on the top of the pile! It was such a happy surprise!

        Also, New York Magazine listed "How to Get Run Over by a Truck" as one of the 13 Books We’re Reading Right Now! Which is mind blowing, because #1 its an amazing magazine and #2 because New York Magazine is my favorite magazine of all time! I can’t even believe that this is all happening! 

        I want to share with you all a really touching thing that has happened just yesterday - my insanely talented friend Arian Saleh, composed a score for the book for his musical project entitled The Libretto Project. It is so beautiful that I can’t help but I weep every time I hear it. On his site are all of the books that he has created scores for, and they are stunning! I am so honored to be a part of that list! 

        So, that’s what’s been happening in my world sweethearts! Thank you for making all of this possible! I am so incredibly grateful for your love and support!

            The end of the Geek and Sundry Fantasy contest approaches, and while Fae Child is in about 18th place out of nearly 400 entries (respectable), I’d like to bring your attention to WITHERFIST, a book written by my good friend Jenny Graham-Jones. She has gotten up to 9th place, and could go even higher in the two weeks left in the contest. "The true name of a demon is inked into her flesh.             Now, back to Fae Child’s news! We have crested 70 books ordered, which means I drew the next winner! Julie Rebideaux chose the pink unicorn as her prize, which means after we hit 80 orders I’ll give away the last toy, the pink dragon.               Thank you so much! I’ve been having fun trying to write something with an old-fashioned fairy-tale sort of ’feel’ - very Robin McKinley hanging out with Lord Dunsany, with m/m protagonists and some very sneaky little Princess Bride references. :-p
