Nearing 750 orders; some giveaways to help get me there (freelance travel writing tips, drinks at the diplomat's lounge within the UN, etc.)

@John Dennehy Keep me updated, I’d like to hear how it goes. I’m also curious about inkshares being unresponsive, I’ve noticed some people have had issues that have gone a week without being reached out to. Inkshares is normally spot on with feedback, I’m thinking about even withholding my campaign until they’re active again just incase there’s a business issue going on instead of simply being focused on the contests.

Perhaps there’s something to do with their new Blink feature, but they seem to have ignored that forum.

Thanks @Luke Fellner.

Advice? Well, I know we’ve all heard a version of this before but I underestimated how much better it is to reach out personally. I thought I could get away with modified cut and pastes, but actually got a higher conversion rate later on when each message was really personal/ specific even though these were people I wasn’t as close with. If it seems the only reason you are reaching out is to sell the other person something you are easy to ignore.

Inkshares hasn’t actually reached out to me since I reached the full funding goal. My impression is they are rather busy right now, so I’m not shocked but hopefully the wheels start turning soon.

@John Dennehy Congratulations on getting the 750 goal! I’m so excited for you, I hope your story gets out and opens people’s eyes. Do you have any advice for making this goal? Also, let me know what the process is like after you hit 750. This is a big moment, I sincerely wish the best for you!

@Luke Fellner, thanks for your support.

Vice is alright. I once sent in a fairly serious article and all their edits just made it outlandish and click-baity, but other times they have done really great work and their editors have made the writing better. So, depends on the specific time, editor and vertical. Vice is pretty big and needs a lot of content so you can definitely get published there (no need to travel), it’s just a matter of finding the right angle and hook. Best of luck.

Congratulations! I’m afraid I can’t make an order, but I’ll be sure to pray for your project and tell my friends about it. What was it like working for Vice? I tried getting involved in that but I’m too young and I have Crohn’s disease so travel would have been difficult.

My memoir, Illegal, is getting very close to 750 preorders but there’s only three weeks left and I thought I’d offer some giveaways to get me over the top.

The big prize: if you order eight or more books I’ll buy you a drink in the diplomat’s lounge within the iconic headquarters of the United Nations in New York. This is a private bar only open to some UN employees and diplomats. I currently work in the UN press office and can bring in a guest.

Smaller prize: I have had moderate success funding world travel by doing freelance journalism for UK and US publications from abroad, including numerous bylines in places like The Guardian and VICE. Recent examples in The Guardian, The Diplomat and Quartz. I’m often asked how to get started and how writing can fund travel. Buy one or more copies and I’ll do my best to answer any questions and get you started.

Onward!

John
