I shouldn’t be misleading: some of those 30-35 revisions were extremely minor changes -- e.g., the position of an element to the left vs. to the right. But the point is that I go through many, many, many iterations, although the number of iterations has gone down over time as I’ve become more comfortable with the process.

I did the writing first and then designed the first and second covers for I wanted the cover to tell a major scene from the book. Yeah, I too did a lot of trial work before I came up with one that I felt was suitable.  No, I can say it was 30-35 revisions but I know it was at least ten.

I should mention that the covers I designed took me something like 30-35 revisions each to get right. I toss and test a LOT of possible designs, and I tend to do it the entire time I’m writing the book.

I, like Serdar and Mark designed my own for the first two books.  The UnHoly Pursuit first book cover is a snapshot of a lone back country road in dusk  to illustrate the nexus of the book. The second one I designed it to emphasis that Immortals maybe pretty to look at but are very deadly.

I created the cover for my book Cupid by Proxy and the original one for Squids In but partway through the Nerdist contest, I decided I needed to up my game so headed over to www.DeviantArt.com and started speaking with people whose style matched my story. In the end I found Eugene Karasz and got him to design the Squids In cover and 9 illustrations for chapters 1-3. Money traded hands for each illustration but I got a great deal.

Design Contest  Found my current cover for Dragon Siege, and I will be using the same designer for all the books in the series as long as she will have me.

I got my original cover for the Seventh Age from Drake Mefestta Designs. He does a bunch of cover art. Just send me a PM if you are interested.

my initial one was just a photo i tweaked on Photoshop after asking permission from the guy who took it (flickr). Then a distant friend who is an art designer saw it and said he must make me a new one... so even though i implored him not to - he went ahead and did it.

I think u can get people from your social network involved, without needing to pay. most indi art designer would help if you give them credit and if they are remotely involved -say a friend of a friend...

Some of the cover art I see here is AMAZING.  Where did you get yours?  What did it cost you?  Let’s send some business to Graphics Designers, who are also working hard on their art! (Also, I need a cover for mine and I’m graphically challenged.)
