Thanks everyone, for your preorders and for following the book. I hope you’re all well.
It’s 5AM and I’ve been punching words while watching Stranger Things, which is a pretty fantastic show so far.
It’s particularly good right now, as the bit I’m writing immediately follows the end of the first "act" of Thrum. Everyone’s kind of uprooted and a bunch of them are hurt, so it helps to have something against which I can measure how they’re behaving.
I finished the day with 1250ish words added, which is less than I’d like (I’d like to have hit the full 3100!), but it’s not a bad haul all the same. Another couple days like that and I’ll have the new chapter ready to upload. I have to write a new song for the new chapter, so you’ll get to see the first cut of that, which should be good for a laugh at least!
I was talking to a friend today, and he suggested that I should find a way to turn the book into a movie musical, which, you know, that’d be lovely, but as I told him, I’ll probably want to do an audio book first. I can probably find voices in my local area to do that project justice, and it would be fun to hear a version of these words and songs rendered by some of the wonderful people in my local arts community.
What do you guys think? Would you listen to what you’ve read so far? Can you get a sense of the music woven into the whole thing?
Take care,
mgb
Hey folks,
Hey folks,
Thanks so much again for your support on this project. I’m going to try to update a little more often going forward, but I appreciate you coming on board early and having patience with me!
As you might have seen, I added a new chapter last night. The new chapter, Homecrossing, is the opener for the book. It seems like Thrum is the odd man out in that it doesn’t have a prologue. Hopefully you’ll forgive me for not subscribing to that particular fantasy trope. I’d love to hear what you think of this opening. Does it make you curious? Can you picture the world? Can you hear it? Senses are really important
I didn’t really "get" how this works before, and so the first chapter I uploaded, The Flame Cure, was from the middle of the book. I figured I’d put up the section that was in the best shape as my "show piece", but it turns out that’s kind of not how this works, so the chapters that are here now don’t make sense together.
I’ll be fixing that over the coming weeks as I prep and upload the work in progress. The first draft of the book isn’t finished yet, so I’ve set myself a rule that I have to write at least as many new words as I’m planning to upload before I’m allowed to add another chapter. So things should start to get busy both on this site and at my keyboard.
Hope you’re all having fun, and I’ll see you in a couple thousand words.
Hey folks,
Hey everyone,
It’s been a struggle getting time lately, but I’ve finally hit 27,500 words (98 pages!), which means I can put up the new chapter (https://www.inkshares.com/books/thrum/book_segments/wild-workings)!
I’m curious what you’re going to think of what’s happening in this bit. The crossers show a little of their private selves, and it’s not at all what they revealed to Mary or her family.
Writing this chapter was a surprise of sorts to me at the time. I knew that there was a moment missing between the dinner and the day of planning, but I was writing without a plan for the book, and I didn’t see what was coming. At this point in the story the wheels start falling off pretty quickly, and I had a lot of the falling-apart figured before I ever laid it at anyone’s feet.
I hope it’s a rewarding read for you, and that you’re well.
