Steph & Jeff: the dynamic duo of dystopian disaster -- and alliteration.

In the year 2350...there is no war...there is no poverty...there is no hunger...

There is only one rule: Obey the QUEEN.

Obey the QUEEN is a science fiction novel set in the year 2350. In the twenty-fourth century, the human race is at peace. The conflicts of the twenty-first century culminated in the Crash War, a global war that led to the collapse of civilization. The survivors turned over all political, legal and economic decision making to the only successful self-aware artificial intelligence, the Quantum Universal Environmental Equilibrium Network. Centuries later, the QUEEN manages humanity through the Life Purpose System. When a person turns sixteen, they are assigned a vocation for life.

The future is not a dystopia. Thanks to the QUEEN’s resource management program, everyone is given a comfortable lifestyle with a broad range of cultural and social freedoms. In exchange for these freedoms, the population exercises no political power and the Life Purpose System guides their careers. Humanity has found a balance between freedom and stability, one that has functioned for hundreds of years -- until now.

As the story begins, something has changed. Rayn Achari, a sixteen-year-old boy living in Singapore, is assigned to be a rogue, a designation that has never been used before. Four people already assigned to their life purposes are reassigned to support him. Through the course of the story, Rayn and his team are ordered to carry out a series of missions with the end goal of destroying the QUEEN. The problem: as far as they can tell, the QUEEN is the one giving the orders.

Instead of telling the story through the eyes of Rayn, Obey the QUEEN is told from the perspectives of his four support personnel -- Rita, Arlo, Simon and Sage. They have to cope with their lives being turned upside-down in an instant and the seemingly incompatible idea that they must follow the QUEEN’s directives, even if the directive is to help Rayn destroy the QUEEN. Obey the QUEEN focuses on four people caught in an impossible situation, one that leads them to a startling conclusion about the true nature of the QUEEN’s rule.
