First Sync City, now Destiny Imperfect. What I like most about Peter Ryan's writing is his knack for telling a good story. Yes, the man knows how to spin a good yarn, but what makes his writing sparkle and shine is this hardboiled underpinning to his fiction that quickly reminds me of Philip Dick or the master himself, Raymond Chandler. It's quite evident with his snappy dialogue and characterizations. You don't have to be a "gamer" to get a handle on what's really happening here, either. Of course, I'm somewhat partial when he starts talking about Korean ramen and the DMZ in chapter one, but that's just me because I have lived in South Korea since 1990. However, what I liked most about this little exchange, which warmed this old Korean hand's heart, was the gaming boom which has existed in Korea since the 1990s when all of the nation (or at least it seemed all of the nation) was bat crazy over Starcraft and Warcraft. It's these kind of moments in Ryan's fiction which makes his stories soar.
Peter, you've got another winner here!
