Matthew Isaac Sobin liked an update for Mission 51

For much of my life I have felt like an outsider, out of place. I am older now, and I have come to believe that this is a common way for many if not most human beings to feel. I have my personal reasons.

My family came to this country from Mexico when I was six years old. Then we moved back to Mexico for one year when I was eight, then back to the US. It was a lot of moving, a lot of goodbyes, a lot of losses. I remember my mother crying, she felt so alone much of the time. She had very little support. Telephone communication to Mexico was difficult at that time, and expensive. She didn’t speak English very well, making her feel even more isolated. As kids, we pick up languages faster and more easily, so I remember having to help her communicate from time to time. We had no other family to lean on. I know now how scary it was for my parents, and how brave they were to face the challenges of immigration, all in order to give their children a shot at a better life. They are true pioneers.

So I grew up in the US without extended family, and when we did visit our family in Mexico, it always felt too brief for the sense of disconnection to totally disappear. Even though I have made many, many friends and acquaintances over the years, and I now have a family of my own, I still carry that feeling of being alone, etched into my soul from my early experiences.

I’m totally okay with all of that now. I have an incredible lot to be grateful for. I am okay with my life’s story, with my challenges, with my successes and my failures. I am in a good place spiritually.

So why am I saying all this? Answer: for you to know a little background information about the spirit of Mission 51. My protagonist Mat is an alien from space, the ultimate outsider! He is the one who came in 1954 to southern Nevada, the place we now know as Area 51. My parents were married that same year, and then came to the US, in their mid-twenties. I was born here in 1955. Mat’s story is an immigrant’s story, like that of my parents. He encounters the challenges of fitting in, the difficulties in mastering a different language and culture, he has to deal with loss, and has to adapt to survive. Mat does these things, like my parents did. He finds freedom. He pursues happiness, as is our American right. And he almost finds peace at the end of Mission 51. If the book makes it to publication and finds an audience, Mat’s story will continue in book two, already taking shape in my crazy head.

So that’s it, a little background information for you to better understand why I wrote this story. Thank you all, for your interest and your support of me and Mission 51!

Peace! :-)

Matthew Isaac Sobin liked an update for LOUISIANA BLOOD - A Chandler Travis and Duke  Lanoix mystery

    Hi knife wielding followers,

just a little splash of news, I have now been officially welcomed into the hallowed halls of Quilldom...there was a lot of funny handshakes and strange creatures in masks, but it’s all over now and I am awaiting my mission instructions before the next stage.

I am also piqued to discover that I am number one in the mystery community...which I’m sure is a whole heap better news than a lower number...unless the scoring is rather like POINTLESS in which case more is less if that makes sense...

Anyway, I should also take this opportunity to steer you in the direction of a stonkingly great read by Peter Ryan, smash hit author of Sync City...his latest work is called Destiny Imperfect and is one of the two books I’m supporting this month and beyond.  So check it out or tell a friend!  DESTINY IMPERFECT

The other book I love is called PROXY, if you like the idea of a collection of pop artists selling their souls to live forever, than this might just be you cup of tea...

Matthew Isaac Sobin liked an update for Tantalus Depths

      Author spotlight!

This week, I’d like to direct your attention to the fascinating dark fantasy Borehole Bazaar: A Vow Unbroken, by  Kendra Namednil

This is a fantasy epic of a different breed. Familiar fantasy creatures coexist and interact in unfamiliar but truthful-seeming ways in a world where one must tread carefully amidst hostile forces on all sides, at all times. Kendra expertly sets the tone and breathes atmosphere into this masterwork of dark fantasy. This isn’t a fantasy land for escapists: this is a brutal, savage land full of danger and catastrophe. In a world like this, where everything is at odds with you no matter who you are...just imagine what kind of hero can arise.
Get this book to Quill, because I really want to read it.

Also, Tantalus Depths is only 4 pre-orders away from 400. Just saying ;)

Matthew Isaac Sobin liked a review for The Last Machine in the Solar System
Beautifully written - the prose flows naturally and is a pleasure to read. The narrator's isolation is palpable, and I immediately felt empathy for the poor thing, all alone, despite its own acceptance of its fate. I really like this.

Matthew Isaac Sobin liked a chapter from Rune of the Apprentice

There are moments in the history of people and planets when myth, legend, and inescapable destiny rule. Such times are bound by prophecy and, once begun, are impossible to halt—for the fates of all, unknowingly intertwined, move toward a numinous end that will not be denied.

It was on such a night that destiny stirred, once again, on the planet of Terra. Hanging in the starry sky like great watching eyes, Terra’s two moons shone with a silvery-blue light which radiated from deep within . . .

                EBOOKS ARE COMING!

Hi everyone!  Guess what?  We just reviewed the ebook files (both kindle and epub), and they’re looking pretty sweet.  What does this mean?  An early weekend present for all my backers - the ebook should be downloadable by this Friday, so if you’d like to dive into the story over the holiday weekend, you can!  Huzzah!

To access the ebook, you must return to www.inkshares.com, log in, and when you click on your profile picture (top right hand corner), select "Bookshelf."  From there you’ll be able to download the book to your computer (or other device).  Then transfer the file into whatever folder holds your ebooks, and boom, you’re good to go!

In other news, the physical books are in as well, and should be shipping out some time in the next week or so.  So if you’d rather have the feel of paper between your fingers, it’s not that much longer of a wait.

For those of you who live in the Maine area, look for a backer thank you party soonish, as well as possible events at Bull Moose stores.  I’ll be sure to let you know!

One last thing - in a few weeks I’m going to be leaning on you all to do me one more favor: post reviews on Amazon (and Goodreads, if you’ve got an account).  Amazon’s algorithms  take into account, among other things, the number of reviews a book has when it is deciding what to include in email newsletters, as well as "you may also like..." links.  They don’t have to be long, they don’t have to be good (though remember what your mother said about not having anything nice to say), they just have to be.  So look for that harassment in the coming weeks, as soon as the book officially goes live over there.

Thanks again for your support!  I’m so excited to deliver the book to you that you blindly ordered almost a year ago.  Super cool.

                Cheers
                Dave

Matthew Isaac Sobin liked an update for The Punch Escrow

Lots of good stuff happening, but I’ll be brief (mostly because I’m writing this update during my lunch hour, and I’m starving). First, please be sure to check out my latest The Future Is Now column on Geek & Sundry. This time I examine just exactly how close we are to putting human feet on Mars. (close than you think!)

Now, I get about ten emails every week asking me, "Is the book done, yet?" - So, as is my charter, I will show you just exactly where I am in the rewrite:

As you can see, I’m very, very close to being done with the first rewrite. I’m staying up extra late and waking up extra early every day this week to get it done, and in my editor’s hands in order to meet the Inkshares manuscript delivery deadline of August 1. If I get that done I think there’s a good chance the book will land on the early side of 2017.

While we’re here, I’d like to also update you on the short story I’m writing for the Too Many Controllers anthology, which, if you haven’t already acquired, you really should. As promised, since the anthology reached its 300th reader target, I’m unveiling the name and synopsis of my contribution. My story is entitled: Morcom is here. Here is the synopsis:

A journalist researching the UK’s World War 2 Colossus computing program at Bletchley Park inadvertently unearths Alan Turing’s most complex, clandestine program. A tome of handwritten code designed for a computer that he knew would not exist for decades after his death. Many believe the program to be an artificial intelligence game Turing designed to defeat his own famous test. A one hundred million dollar XPRIZE challenge is announced, awarded to the first person or team who could successfully execute Turing’s opus. A team from the University of Michigan thinks they’ve got what it takes.

Lastly, I wanted to call your attention to my editor, Robert Kroese, and his new book The Big Sheep which is officially available for purchase today. I’m a huge fans of his writing, and this book is sure to entertain. It’s half Philip K Dick, half Douglas Adams. What’s not to love? You can get yourself a copy from Amazon, or, if you’re a collector, autographed copies are available from Schuler Books.
