Brian Fitzpatrick liked an update for Mission 51

    Mission 51 background stuff

Torkiyan missions to Cerulea (the planet Earth) are always organized by two factions within their government: one that is interested in spreading the beliefs and culture of the Torkiyan people, and another more interested in the commercial and financial aspects of the endeavor. The ideology of these competing yet complementary views are clearly spelled out to the crews of the missions in their Mission Directives:

    1. To spread Torkiyan Knowledge, Wisdom, and Truth

    2. To advance the technology of endemic intelligent species with the goal of eventually connecting the two worlds

When the Torkiyan Mission 51 to Cerulea was organized about 500 Earth-years ago, two individuals represented these two factions: Petrus, a Torkiyan Ambassador and father of our protagonist Mat, and Major Tran, the Director of the Space Administration.

Mat’s main loyalty was to his beloved father. In that sense, the Mission Directive to spread Torkiyan Knowledge, Wisdom, and Truth was more important than the commercial/financial directive. At least that’s how Mat felt in the beginning. Things changed with the realities of his situation on Earth. Humans made it difficult to be altruistic, and he needed to survive.

The Spanish Missions of Alta California

~La Misión de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad is mentioned in the closing chapters of Mission 51.~

Several ideas came together when I first imagined the story of Mission 51. I wanted to honor my immigrant parents. I wanted to contribute to the immigration narrative in general, even if it was in some small way. I wanted to be honest about human nature, about our virtues and our defects. I thought about the waves of immigration that have come into the United States, and how they have changed the very face of America. I thought about how invaders have decimated native cultures. And then it all crystalized when I thought about the Spanish missions in California, and when I realized the notorious events in Area 51 occurred at the same time as my parents’ immigration to the US in 1954. The story simply had to be about missions and aliens! :D

I am looking forward to the day this story is published. Pre-orders will make that happen, so I humbly request your help. If you have not pre-ordered yet, now is a great time! If you already have, I thank you very much! This is going to be fun! :D

So, initially I wasn’t going to worry about doing TTG via Inkshares. Then just as I was putting the finishing touches on the book I saw Nerdist was holding a Sci-Fi Contest, thus I’ve decided to throw my book into the ring, one last time.  I figure the contest could be the best chance to get extra eyes on Through the Ghost. Either look for Through the Ghost in the Nerdist Contest or follow the link below if you want to help: https://www.inkshares.com/books/through-the-ghost-1c45ac

        Thanks, and wish me luck.

Brian Fitzpatrick liked an update for 1000 Faces

          Hello, 1000 Faces followers.

As I’m almost certain you’re all aware, 1000 Faces is part of the Nerdist Sci-Fi contest and is currently placed 4th. To be in with a chance of receiving Inkshares full publishing support, the book needs to place 3rd or higher. Due to the short length of the contest - it ends on June 25th - I’m going to come right out and ask you all for a big favour: please consider preordering and recommending this project to a friend. Today. Right now, even.

1000 Faces is set in a not-so-difficult to imagine near-future where the internet bubble has burst, creating an unprecedented era of paranoia as every part of the internet becomes accessible to the public. To maintain a shred of anonymity and privacy, people wear digital avatars - a mask, like a more high-quality, identity-concealing version of the photo filters we see on Snapchat and other social media. The main character, Kara Finch, is a designer of these masks for the ubiquitous MyFace corporation. She’ll find herself caught up in an attack on her companies code base, coerced into working with a new generation of cyber-terrorists and strong-armed by government snoopers. If you like Black Mirror, A Scanner Darkly, Mr Robot, or Gattaca, her story should tickle your fancy.

I’ll be sharing some draft content from the book soon. Keep your eyes on your inbox.

          ~ Jenny

Brian Fitzpatrick liked an update for Witherfist

Hello, readers! Long time no write. I haven’t been in touch for a while, and that’s mainly because I haven’t had a lot to write to you about!

Work on Witherfist continues at a steady pace. Right now, I’m in the process of some fairly large adjustments to the structure of the plot. I’ve heard from other authors in the Inkshares community that there is a lot happening in the way of preparing, polishing and publishing manuscripts - which is really promising. Given the timescales being quoted, and my current progress with Witherfist, it’s unlikely that the book will see publication before 2018, as I’m going to submit my manuscript to Inkshares in Autumn 2017 at the earliest.

In other news, Inkshares launched a new publishing contest this week, looking for the next big sci-fi novel. I’ve tossed my hat into the ring with an entry! Why not, eh? You can follow the book - tentatively titled 1000 Faces - and if you want to support it, you can preorder right now. 1000 Faces is set in the near future, in a society where all of the internets secrets have been revealed. To try and maintain a modicum of privacy and anonymity in public, people use ’digital avatars’ to mask their faces - imagine Snapchat filters that you wear all day! The book follows a digital avatar designer who ends up tangled in cyber terrorism, government conspiracies and a whole host of ethical chaos. It’s a dash of Mr. Robot meets A Scanner Darkly via Gattaca with an unplanned detour into Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

As a little bonus, I’d like to share with you a piece of ’flash fiction’ that I wrote for a sci-fi writing contest earlier this year. The World In A Teacup is a story that I wrote in just 48 hours, based on a handful of prompts. You can download it for free on Amazon / Amazon UK. If you don’t use a Kindle, there are other download options available via Pronoun.

            Thanks for reading,

            ~ Jenny
