The word "like," between "was" and "the" is word is not necessary in my humble opinion.

Anabeth Caerhart, the backseat’s only occupant was lurched sideways against the restraint of her seatbelt. Up front, the driver gripped the steering wheel with tight hands, breathing heavily as the adrenal rush caught up to him. The back right tire had blown and the two passengers were now sitting, staring at each other in the review mirror. Ana raised her hands and smirked, “Wasn’t my fault.”
