"Signs of the war for Freefolk Independence was hidden, but it was there all the same. Earth scorched by magic flame did not yield for generations, so bare spots on the road or in the fields to a trained eye were markers of a battle that had happened some time back. Glassed sand, mostly still glossed and unbroken, centered most of the scorches on the road Cora was travelling. There was some sort of conflict on this road years ago, for certain. This close to the coast, and a ferry on the trail, made this a heavily used route. There were camps lining this road during the war, most likely. Camps from both sides at different times, with the ebb and flow of victory. Townspeople from all over would have been forced into conscription. Lenny might’ve had a story to tell; though Cora would have declined to hear them. Memories are different than stories. Inconvenient are the stories that are too uncomfortable to hear, though so much more for those who have to remember the tale like it was yesterday."

Dear Readers,
Meet Cora Montgomery. Cora was raised on freefolk land at O’Tally’s Ranch. She learned how to ride and care for horses, how to shoot, and how to keep your head straight when the going got tough. Rustlers had begun stealing anything that wasn’t tied down, and Cora was too young to fight them off with the rest of the hands. She did what she thought was best, and rode East to the Andurien Empire, across the Andurien River, and became a horse master for the Militia. When the war began between East and West, Cora was forced to take arms against the people she had tried to protect. Though the Andurien forces never reached the O’Tally Ranch, Cora felt that she had somehow turned her back on her family and her freefolk past. In an attempt to make amends, she accepted the post as an Imperial Marshal, in hopes to return west and make amends. Years later, she finally got the chance...
