This is Book One of a five-book-plus series that may span decades of the main character’s life, as he struggles to do what is necessary among chaotic times.
The full series/storyline is more complex than twenty simple words can shrink it down to be, accurately. It is not "our" galaxy, but another one with many races (including humans), and common interstellar FTL travel, and technologies both mundane and wildly beyond the imagination.
An interstellar government, a. . .
Just realized, since I’ve been working on this book-series for some time (circa the late ’80s at least), I have various mentions of an "Alliance", a "Commonwealth", and a "Confederation" being the terminology for the "good" government form; apologies for any confusion or difference from the backstory and setting document....
At some point I will really have to settle down to figure out exactly which I intend to be the terminology. Suffice it to say, I was thinking something along the lines of a Star Trek styled Federation, mixed with a more Star Wars-ish Republic, only without either Borg or Jedi. Eh, it’s probably mostly like the old Commonwealth from Gene Roddenberry’s Andromeda television series, as it was before the fall ... with an elder race to guide all member races and worlds in a common direction.
