Michael Haase liked an update for Deus Hex Machina

Today is a big day, one that I have been dreading and anticipating in equal measure. Today, I officially start editing Deus Hex Machina and building my second draft.

Here’s what the process looks like. Staples is now my spirit animal:

For the next 30 days it’s my plan to implement the changes I have noted down on those little blue cards, honing my first draft into a stronger, more coherent second. When that is done, I will be more than ready to move from alpha reading into beta. As before, let me know if you’re interested.

Once I have the second draft returned from beta readers I’ll hash out a third draft, and then I should be ready to submit to Inkshares by the end of the year. For those that like timelines (and so that I have some accountability for my process) here is what I have planned for the next year:

Like any plan, this will probably change around a bit. Generally though, I am planning to write two books a year, and fund one novel in each series. This doesn’t include other projects I want to be part of, collaborations like Too Many Controllers and Makhaira, so my schedule is going to need to be a little fluid should something awesome come up that I want to take part in. I’m also toying with the idea of funding Shadow of the Owl again before I  fund the sequel. There is just something very appealing about having the entire series under the Inkshares publishing umbrella.

Speaking of series, for those of you curious minded folks out there, Deus Hex Machina is a trilogy, and Shadow of the Owl et al is a series with six books planned.
So if you look at that calendar, you’ll be able to extrapolate out and figure out what I have planned for the year after that.

TL;DR: Lots of writing will be happening, mostly in my two main series so if you’re eager to find out what happens to Mylena or Isidore, fear not, books are coming.

Enjoy the silence!

Michael Haase liked an update for Cape’s Side Bay

    Hello Cape’s Side Bayers!

Here we go! Officially 2 weeks left in the campaign!

It’s been a long 5 months and somewhat bitter sweet that the end of pre-orders is fast approaching.

We have just under 50 orders to go, ideally I’d love to hit that before the 2 weeks are up (this way I can take a much needed nap sooner!), but, you guys have been unbelievably supportive and somehow become more so with each passing day. I cannot thank you enough for the recommendations, the reviews, the prologue recommendations, and of course the orders.

If you haven’t ordered a copy, and want to, you can click on this link here:  https://www.inkshares.com/books/cape-s-side-bay

    :)

Today, with 2 weeks left, I’ll share the water colour painting my friend did for Cape’s Side Bay back in March (it was later used by fellow Inkshares author Tabi Card in the cover art you see on the page).

Hope you enjoy it and the rest of your weekend!

    All the best,

    James

Michael Haase liked an update for Devil’s Call

      Beautiful Readers,

I have good news, and I have... regular news.

For those of you just tuning in, Devil’s Call began its life as a novella, meaning it clocked in at fewer than 40,000 words and the ending was ambiguous and the antagonist, George Dalton, barely appeared in the story at all.

After some behind the scenes occurrences which I’m not at liberty to discuss yet, I decided to expand the story, flesh out the Dalton character, and make it a full-length novel, meaning its word count would double and I would have to, you know, actually do work.

The good news is, after a month or so of bitching and gnashing my teeth and Adam Gomolin yelling at me to not quit on him, I have finished a scene outline and a synopsis of what the completed novel will look like, so it has a proper ending and character arcs and themes and so on and so forth.

The regular news is, I now have to rewrite the hundred-something pages I’d already decided were the entirety of the original novella, and then actually write the rest of the draft, which won’t be as difficult as I’m making it sound. I made my bed today. I can do anything.

Within the next few weeks, y’all can expect a rewritten first chapter, which I’m about 90% sure will be about 30% different from the one that’s up now, and if I really throttle my keyboard I will have a completed draft by the end of September.

(And I shall throttle my keyboard. One thing this process has solidified for me is the fact that I produce pages, pardon my French, like a fucking maniac.)

That’s it. That’s the news. Expect the new Chapter 1 by the end of this upcoming week.

Smoke ’em if you got ’em,
      J.

Michael Haase liked an update for One Murder More

One Murder More is the winner of the 2016 Silver Falchion Award in the categories of Best First Novel, Best Political Thriller and Best Female Private Eye/Sleuth!

I was nearly speechless at the podium all three times at the  award ceremony in Nashville last night, and haven’t improved much since!

Thank you for your ongoing  kindness and support as readers and fellow writers, and to Inkshares for a terrific partnership that made my book a reality!
