I liked Ms. Beverly a lot. She was someone I could talk to about my worrying, my nightmares. She taught me relaxation techniques, breathing tricks with a paper bag—for when I’m having anxiety attacks. I thought she cared. Unfortunately, one afternoon I told her that I loved her and she calmly put down her pencil and told me that it was inappropriate for a boy to become overly attached to his therapist. She referred me to Ms. Wendy the next week. Just like that, she didn’t want to see me anymore.
