I’ve been fueled by soundtracks while writing The Madness of Mr. Butler (Space Opera). It kind of depends on the mood of the chapter I’m writing, though. I’ve found the band Godpspeed You! Black Emperor to be quite useful. They are an instrumental/experimental rock band. Similar bands have helped as well...Explosions In The Sky, Mogwai...just put on Godspeed You! Black Emperor as a station on Pandora and you’ll get a lot of great instrumental bands.

For gentler times, I listen to sitar ragas (Ravi Shankar) and Tibetan Bowl Music. Chopin is a favorite of mine, and sometimes I’ll go for those string quartet tributes to different bands...there are tons of those.

Anyway, that’s my short list. Hope any of it helps!

I can’t listen to anything with English lyrics when I’m writing, not unless I want to write a book of song lyrics. So far, I’ve been writing in silence ... though it does seem to me that some sort of music in the background might be nice. I wish I knew what could work.
