Sounds like a stab at the elder adult reading market.  Kind of like
The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson.  This book is a very funny, poignant and touching read.  Your idea might be even better with a female protagonist.  I'm seeing Maggie Smith in the lead.

This sounds like it could produce a cool buddy story as two guys encounter some very rough characters in a cold dystopian America.  Cool!
