Happy Tuesday, Space Crew!

First, to start things off properly, I need to give a space-sized congratulations to my friend JF Dubeau, who’s successfully funded his second book, A God in the Shed. 750 orders with a few days to spare. Congratulations!

Onto Cup news! I used to think we had a lot of time. Wasn’t it just yesterday I was saying there was a month to go? And now we only have half that.

I know a lot of you are followers who haven’t picked up a copy. But time is running out, and the best way you can show support is to place your orders before the funding period ends.

Those who have ordered, let me remind you what’s in store with your Recommendations. If you’re one of the top three Recruitment Officers you’ll be receiving this prize pack:

So join me in shamelessly spamming this book everywhere. I want my social feeds so filled with this book that I miss out on more interesting things and complain for a moment before remembering how grateful I should be.

I don’t know where the line is, but I’m sure International Transport has crossed it in their latest salvo against me. Using beloved children’s puppet Paco to subvert your children into convincing you to boycott my book. Have you seen it?

They have delivered a strongly worded message via encrypted channels, assuring me that were we to reach 250 individual readers they would "PULL OUT ALL THE STOPS." Well, let’s show them we mean business. When we reach 250 readers I will unlock a new amazing giveaway!

In other news, I’m very pleased that I can now formally inform you that the developmental editor I’m working with to put The Punch Escrow in tip top form is none other than beloved science fiction author Robert Kroese, author of the amazing Mercury Falls series, the Dis series, Schroedinger’s Gat, and the upcoming The Big Sheep! Rob and I met through a mutual friend. He was one of The Punch Escrow’s early beta readers. His feedback as a beta reader was so spot on that I knew that he’d be the perfect developmental editor for the book. When the manuscript was finished, I trepidatiously asked him, and he agreed.

I’m now working on implementing many of Rob’s proposed edits to the manuscript - he’s the perfect editor for me because: He knows quantum physics, he gets hard sci fi and humor, and he lives in Michigan too! I am so excited to be working with him on The Punch Escrow.

Thank you so much for your support! Keep spreading the word, and I’ll keep unlocking cool stuff.

Perfect advice Tal - may I also add that the personal approach is very important.
I learned the hard way. I.E. that if you have list of mates that you used to play basketball with every week for a while, or even guys from uni that you used to be very close with.  If u send a general email you’ll get 0-2 orders.. if u approach each in a personal email, the success ratio is much highe, close to 100% if these are real friends.

I haven’t reached Quill in ten days, took me a month+ but just a small bit i found out the hard way :)

      thanks for the below Tal!

I don’t usually do two updates in one day but...

        WE FUNDED!

So let me make something clear: I use the term ’we’ when talking about this campaign because while I write the book, it’s your support and encouragement that makes it happen. These aren’t empty words meant to artificially include you and make you feel like part of the process. The whole point of Inkshares is that this is a community effort. A symbiotic endeavour between reader and writer to help create works of fiction and bring them to the public.

There are a lot of people who have gone above and beyond for this to happen and I’d like to highlight at least three that can benefit immediately from your support:

John Robin, the author of Blood Dawn, spearheaded community efforts to rally people together after I called for help from fellow authors. John is a hard working writer and a helluva guy. Check out Blood Dawn and support it.

Andre Brun, my CEGEP buddy and author of Lies & Deception campaigned for me harder than I could campaign for myself. He leveraged his own book and his salesmanship skills to gather a ton of pre-orders and get A God in the Shed in front of many new pairs of eyes. Lies & Deception is a terrifyingly ambitious book that deserves your attention. Check it out.

Paul Inman, my cohost on WriteBrain and author of Ageless also lent a hand and was a big part of the community, leveraging the release of his own book to help get visibility for A God in the Shed. Check out Ageless, I read it and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Finally, let me plug my buddy Brian Guthrie who was a great help and is currently participating in the Geek & Sundry Hard SciFi contest on Inkshares. Check out his book After Man and support it with all your heart (and pre-orders).

More soon as thing develop and, as promised:

Craig A. Munro liked the forum thread, How many followers should a book have before I take the next step with it?
For whatever it’s worth (and I’m sure this is the exception rather than the rule), my book had 2 followers when I opened pre-orders.

I’m sure there’s an upside to having a base you can send an update to when you open pre-orders, and some folks would argue it’s prudent to amass dozens/even a couple hundred followers before starting a campaign, but I personally believe it doesn’t make the difference between a successful campaign and one that doesn’t make it. The vast, vast, vast majority of my sales were people who followed and ordered the book all at once while I was in campaign mode.

I think if you’re unsure, give your campaign some extra leash. Inkshares recommends 90 days for your campaign, but there’s no reason you can’t go with 120, 150 or even 300 days and then amass followers while the book is on sale. I think there’s a significant benefit to getting people to follow the book when they also can pre-order it, because then they’re making one trip to your page instead of two.

It’s kind of funny though. Kind of like that moment where someone catches you talking to yourself and you didn’t realize you were talking out loud.
