Dave Barrett liked an update for Nowhere Else I Want to Be: A Memoir

Hello, readers and friends of "Nowhere Else I Want to Be":

Happy Fall, everyone! I thought you’d like to know that the September issue of A&U Magazine has a lovely article about Miriam’s House, my book and me - "A Calling and More" - by Tammy Banks.

Read the first few paragraphs below, then click on the link to read the rest of the article.

For Carol Marsh, starting Miriam’s House was something that she felt called upon to do. “It felt like coming home,” she recalls, “and I think that is the hallmark of a calling.”

Marsh founded the Washington, D.C., residence for homeless women with HIV/AIDS in 1996. But in many ways, she had been moving toward this kind of work since her teen years, when she’d read Catherine Marshall’s Christy. The 1967 bestselling novel about a young school teacher doing her damnedest to bring education to children in Appalachia had fired Marsh’s imagination: She’d seen herself as being “a benevolent helper of others” and making sense of all “the cruelty and inequity” in the world. There’d been comfort in “dreaming of a life of service in which I would make things perfect for some small village or group of children. For that they would, of course, love and appreciate me.”

But the path to our true callings is seldom a straight one. We take wrong turns, get waylaid, or lose sight of where we’re headed. “I lost that vision for a while,” Marsh admits. “I moved to Washington, D. C., at thirty-five, and that’s when I reconnected with a passion that had been mine as a teenager.”

She threw herself into the work of bringing her vision of Miriam’s House to life. “We didn’t want to create a cookie-cutter program that forced women to comply or leave,” Marsh writes in her memoir Nowhere Else I Want to Be (Inkshares 2016), “so we opted for an open-to-the-possibilities, organic kind of growth that, while it achieved its goal of allowing residents to help shape this new program, also left us in chaos much of the time.” She started out “with a few rules about sobriety and violence and being able to live cooperatively in community” but soon realized that she needed to go beyond that.

For the disease was, she saw, only part of the story that each woman brought with her. The other part of the story—call it the back story or the subtext—was even more disturbing. (At Goucher College, she was, Marsh explains, encouraged to dig deeper and go “underneath the stories.”) Juanita, for instance, had begun shooting up at fourteen in an attempt to escape from a reality that included savage beatings by her own mother. Alyssa had been pimped out by a drug-addicted mother when she was twelve; despite that, she still loved and kept reaching out to the parent who never came to see her during her time at Miriam’s House.

Dave Barrett liked an update for Slim and The Beast: A Novel
Hello fine folks, it’s been a while indeed. All I can say is there’s  good reason (I think) for my radio silence the past 2.5 years: I’ve been toiling away on a new book and it has taken all of my mental energy to finish the drafting process.

The Requisitions is a historical fiction novel that takes place in Nazi-occupied Lodz, Poland, a real-world dystopia that was deemed Hitler’s "City of the Future" on one side and was home to a hermetically-sealed ghetto on the other, ruled by a Jewish despot who called himself, "King of the Jews."

Much like Slim and The Beast, the book is about how we search for and derive meaning in life when facing the unconscionable. It is about creation and destruction. It is about hatred and love. It is about the human relationships that sustain us when we ourselves are lost. If you’re interested in learning more, check out a summary and the first few chapters here:

      www.inkshares.com/books/the-requisitions

And don’t hesitate to FOLLOW the book if you enjoy it, which serves two purposes:

      1) The more followers I have for The Requisitions, the more chapters I can share. More followers = more chapters. That’s my promise. And whether or not I end up using Inkshares’ publishing model for this work, sharing these excerpts gives me a chance to give back to the community that first got me published.

      2) Inkshares has grown since Slim and The Beast was first released, and there are a lot of literary agents and film makers now perusing the website. The more FOLLOWERS I get, the better the chances The Requisitions has of "being discovered." The publishing world is just as wonky as ever, but Inkshares has been gracious enough to put faith in my work, and that’s all I can ask for.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and please leave a comment or post in the discussion on The Requisitions if you want to continue the dialogue. Alternatively, shoot me an email: slopezba@gmail.com.

      All love,

      Samuél

Dave Barrett liked an update for Human Resources

It’s September, Spring has begun in my neck of the world, and the percentage complete on my rewrite tracking continues to climb!

I’m now halfway through the developmental edit rewrite of the second act of Human Resources, and it’s going well. I recently received detailed notes back from my editor for act one, and it was very encouraging; there were a lot of notes, but they were almost entirely at a very low level, suggesting we now have the structure and flow of act one working nicely. My current plan is to power through the rest of act two, hand it over, implement the fixes to act one while they read it, the jump into act three.

It’s time I addressed the elephant lurking in the corner; I know you’re all wondering, “why is this update so late?” Rest assured I still care. The truth, one which totally sounds like a line, but it isn’t (I promise), is that I’ve been so caught up in the rewrite I almost forgot about the update.

Welcome to those who have recently pre-ordered, thank you for joining the team that is helping make this book a reality. For everyone else, thank you for sticking with me — your patience will be rewarded.

        Robert.

Dave Barrett liked an update for How to Get Run Over by a Truck

          Dear Sweethearts,

I hope that you all are doing well! I wanted to send you a very short, but really exciting update: this past week How to Get Run Over by a Truck was in the Top 20 best selling non-fiction books on Amazon last week! We made it to #17 - which is nothing short of incredible! Especially almost a year after the book was first published!!!

Thank you for believing that this book would be successful, even when no one in the publishing world did. You have put this book into the hands (and ears!) of so many people!!! You are an amazing, generous and kind person. Words can’t express how grateful I am for your support then, and now!

          Heart,

          Katie

Dave Barrett liked an update for Beyond The Code

            BIG NEWS!!!!!!!!!

I first want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have followed Beyond the Code to this point. I know it has been a long road and you don’t know what it means to me that you all have stuck in there with me. With that being said i have a big announcement to make. WE HAVE A RELEASE DATE!!!

That’s right, after this lengthy journey we are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Inkshares has officially put this project into gear and the complete manuscript is in the capable hands of Chersti and Carlisa at WriterTherapy for it’s copy edit as we speak.

If all goes according to Inkshares schedule, the book should be out and about by       January 30/18.

During this time i’ll also be getting some great cover art made by the talented people at CoverKitchen. They are the minds behind the colourful cover art to Inkshares very own "Sunshine is forever" by Kyle T Cowan. I’ll keep you updated on the progress and will hopefully have something cool to show you soon.

Thanks again for all of your support thus far. I, for one, can’t wait till the winter.
