A. White liked an update for Kingdom of Dreams

Happy Labor Day! Hope no one is actually laboring today.

Another milestone achieved: We are over 100 orders and 50 backers! Thanks again, and please keep those pre-orders coming. When we reach 60 backers I’ll do my first drawing for a limited edition print as promised.

But to deliver on my new art promise for reaching 50 backers, please check out an alternative cover I came up with for my novel. I call this this Bring on the Fall/Halloween/Tim Burton version if you will. Please let me know your thoughts!

*Sorry, this ended up being very long-winded. I bolded the more relevant information to your question.*

I understand completely what you mean! I’ve posted small snippets of writing with short stories on blogs, but I’ve always been reluctant to share them with my network of people.

I decided I wanted to actually do something with the novels I’ve been working with over the years, so I posted one on Inkshares and then was encouraged to join the Geek & Sundry contest and start funding.

I did a lot of research on how to run a successful campaign, and it all seemed to boil down to messaging literally everyone you’ve ever met and asking them to support you. I started easy, with people that I knew I could count on. Then, I branched out to people I was acquainted with, and then I moved on to people that I sort-of-kind-of-knew. All of these, even down to messaging people I know very well, has been an introvert’s anxiety induced nightmare.

This has been an exhausting adventure, made more exhausting by the fact that I’m introverted and it is really hard to ask people for help or to support me. I’m only a month into a three-month contest/campaign and going forward seems daunting.

I’ve already gotten nasty messages from people,  sadly most were authors that I did nearly free or completely free design work for and had felt confident they would return the favor of with their support. The response rate, or lack-thereof from people that I know has been equally disheartening. The need to keep up in a contest that is solely driven on the amount of people you know, and can get onboard with your project, and less about the quality of your writing is exhausting, especially for writers who are not comfortable with sharing their work or do not have a vast network.

My saving grace has been in my very close friends who have pushed the book to their network, and when I say push, I mean going to people personally (friends, family, and co-workers) and getting them on board with pre-ordering.

Yesterday, I took a big hit in the motivation area. When you realize the campaign or contest you’re in is very carrot-and-stick with the prize continuously moving forward and you continuously chasing it, on top of tumble-weed replies or cricket responses in your network, you get knocked a couple of pegs in that department. When I get bummed a friend says, "You’re allowed to throw a pity party for one day, and then the next day you get back to work."

I’ve been through a lot in life, things far worse than the stress of this campaign, and so I have to remind myself that this is a cakewalk, even if losing will close a really great door for me. I grew up poor, I worked to put myself through college while taking care of my elderly grandmother. I gave all of myself, emotionally and monetarily, to parents and to the point I had to move a thousand miles away, with little money and no job, in order to save what was left of me. I’ve been desperate. I’ve been broken. I’ve cried myself to sleep nights on end, but no matter what happened in life I kept pushing. I worked endlessly, and I still do. Sixteen hour work days are "normal days" for me.

Motivation. When I’m tired, when I’m on the verge of a nervous breakdown and I wonder why I keep going on, I think about what I want in life. I think about that goal and I let myself feel how much I want it. I let myself understand how much I truly want it, and I press on. I learned the hard way that, for most of us, nothing is ever given in life. For most of us, the only way to ever to see that goal fulfilled is to want something bad enough that you’ll give anything and do anything to accomplish it.  What I learned about motivation is that it is best found in that fire that burns inside you. Motivation is found in that burning, soaring, breaking need to have that one thing that you’ve always wanted and the willingness to do anything it takes to succeed. When you lose motivation, seek that flame inside you. Seek that goal, and remind yourself of why you do what you do. Let that fire drive you onward.

Sorry for the longness, it is a personal problem with finding it hard to write short things. I wrote a blog post a while back about motivation and goals, you can find it here.

Hello every one I would like to thank you all, thank you for the support. It has been wonderful getting to know you all and many of your works. We only have approximately 28 days to go to fund this project. Less than a month. It has come down to each supporter helping to make this book a into a printed reality. I believe 235 orders  can be accomplished in 28 days. So all who have not ordered please do so.

      Have a happy holiday weekend.

        Hey you beautiful people!

We are still bouncing back and forth between 5th and 6th this week. Right now we have 94 Unique Readers and we need 23 more Unique Readers to pre-order in order to get into the Top 3. The gap is widening, but I’m not going to be disheartened by it. As much as winning this contest would open a lot of life-changing doors or as much as I think my book is worth making it into the Top 3, it is definitely a matter of how many people you know and  I’ve almost reached the end of my network. I have a lot of maybe’s on the fence, but not 23 of them. I desperately need your help.

I can’t repay you with pre-orders, because I don’t have the monetary means to do that. But I can repay you with graphic design work like cover art, bookmark design, fliers, etc (excluding illustrated work). I can also repay you with recommendations and reviews on your work. Just message me!

Anyway! Onward to some cool things. How would you like some history about one of the main characters?

        KELEIR AHRIMAN

Keleir was born cursed with the soul of a Rauke at war with his own. A Rauke is a creature forged from the excess matter left over at the birth of a universe, and can only exist by taking a human child as a host. Like all children born with a Rauke, Keleir was surnamed Ahriman, which means darkness. From the time he was born, until he turned five, his village tortured him in the hopes that it would save him from his curse, but it ended up unleashing another, more terrible one instead. He killed his father and brought a Blood Curse upon himself, which allowed the Rauke control. He fled and was taken in by the Adrid army, where he fought for them and earned the bloody reputation: Lifesbane. For thirteen years the Rauke was in control of Keleir’s body until Saran found a way to give his consciousness the reins again. Keleir has spent the last five years atoning for his sins by helping the rebellion he almost crushed and fighting to keep the Rauke at bay. Keleir Ahriman is a Fire Mage.

Second treat: A short, old bit of writing I did a few years ago |Click Here|.

Next week I’ll have another character profile up and another random bit of writing for you to enjoy. Have a great weekend guys!

Thanks you Charles for re-reading it and seeing more of the full meaning of the story.  That’s the allegory I’m making. I do not like to write making it obvious what I’m saying.  I like for a reader to ponder it and search for clues. She must keep moving in order to survive for it they idle too long in one place Nikola’s henchmen will find them. I chose the lawless analogy of the Old West to illustrate to  what degree he is outside of the law which is why so much occur in the West. Nikola follows no law. He make them up to suit his whim. He is untouchable.  Nikola is the shark and Ana and Bea, (mostly Ana) is the blood in the water that he smells. He views them as weak and an easy target. Like all predators, his goal is to kill.

The story opens with action letting me know the main character is a doer, the kind of person who get things done. I admire that in a character. I do not care for wimpy characters. I think it's great the writer created such an unusual heroine, a mom. Usually the only place moms are heroes is on Lifetime television. I haven't read a story of a heroine mom yet, usually if she is in the story she is a creature of horror or a terrible person or so unbelievable good or have no interest outside her husband and kids. I like this story portraying real women..

Thank you Mark, thank you noticing that a lot of time, research  and love was put into making this book. You are right a great, tremendous amount of time has gone into creating this novel and characters.  The search was long but enlightening. I tried to keep the characters as accurate to the various ancient texts and tomes written about them  as possible while adding a futuristic twist the story.  Much of the ancient history I used in creating this book and others isn’t common taught in schools outside of  college level anthropology .
