I won.

When you read that, how do you hear it? If it’s something in your mind like a soft, shocked whisper, the kind of sound you hear when someone speaks in the stillness of a slow snowfall, then you’re pretty close to how I’m hearing myself say it. I won. I won… I won? ...I WON!?!

Whether it’s the Sword and Laser’s Tom and Veronica, journalist Alicia Smock, or other authors mentioning my name in their own reader updates or raffle videos, the experience of being exposed and showered with praise for my story has really validated all this hard work I’ve done.

And, …. wow… this campaign has been some hard work.

Somewhere in an article or something I said to somebody that I was back on what I call “The Skyrim Sleeping Schedule.” (I’m sure some former students of mine will recall EXACTLY how loopy I got soon after 11/11/11.) Basically 4 to 5 hours of fitful sleep every night for the past month has really racked my body. Even as I type this, my mind’s eye glances over its shoulder and sees my body tapping its watch, shaking its head. I hear it say “Joe, it’s time, man.” And I’m like, “Hey, wait! I got a raffle video to do! Six new winners, six more $20 giftcard giveaways, six titles gone from my priceless video game collection!” But in this vision, my body wraps its arm warmly around me and escorts me from the premises of health, and it says, “Maybe this weekend, pal.” So I’m about to give in and just get sick…

I am utterly exhausted. ...and I’m kind of numb. Maybe it’s the fact that I’m typing this all right now secretly from my work cubicle, clicking back to the work window whene….. …. …. …. ver someone walks by. But right at this moment, I can’t celebrate. I’m happy. I’m BEYOND EUPHORIA, in fact, but I can’t jump for joy just yet.

I haven’t yet mastered the art of embedding gifs or whatever the cool kids are doing these days - so this little graphic here will have to do to express my current state of existence:

(!!!!)

(What? I’m a man of letters, I tell ya!)

“Thank you all so much.” I know that track’s been on repeat for quite some time, but there’s no other phrase that can contain all of my feelings and gratitude toward your support. Thank you.

Congrats to you Joseph, enjoy the celebrations tonight.  All the best to you in the road ahead!!!!!:)

Two updates. Two days in a row. Yes, it's reached that, hasn't it.

Real quick, though, I just wanted to say that Sword & Laser, sponsors of the Inkshares contest I am participating in, just wrapped up an interview of me and the other top two contenders, Matthew Isaac Sobin and Craig Munro. Please CLICK HERE to see their video on youtube.

It was a lot of fun! I didn't get to say all I wanted to about my book, but it's my brain's fault... You know how it is: you have all these things pre-loaded but then forget how to speak a coherent language once someone asks what's on your mind. Well, all my brain's failures considered, I think I spoke all right. And I think Matt and Craig spoke just as well if not better. I'm excited now more than ever before to get my hands on their books. (And, Craig, if you're reading this, even though I said I'd wait til the last day on the show, I say now to heck with that! In the spirit of camaraderie I'll be buying "Bones of the Past" right after this, my friend. Your description of your characters - that Carver, though, right! - has made me a fan.)

It was a blast. I'm having a great time with this whole Inkshares thing, and I think that mindset comes through on these airwaves. Everything I said about this place, about these authors, it's all true. All of it.

And as ever, thank you so very much for following this project. For reading this update. And for your pre-order of "The Animal in Man."

Don't stress grammatical errors, especially when they are minor. In my experience, most readers of your draft will glaze right past them without a thought. The content is king.

Hello again, dear readers.

In the spirit of camaraderie, I had a call tonight with author Matthew Isaac Sobin, whose book "The Last Machine in the Solar System" is currently in the #2 spot of the Sword and Laser contest. I've been a fan of Matt's book ever since it entered the race, gladly putting down my money for a copy (now three copies, actually) on the second day of the contest. Although he is my competitor, I wish his book all the best. It's worth your attention as well, so help him get it funded!  I'm glad we got together on the phone line. Mostly, we just talked shop about writing, and blew off some steam about the tireless campaign to earn your support. We commiserated about my failed attempts at plastering the city with my AiM posters, and I heard about the fun he had delivering Last Machine holiday cards - both of which netted us about 0-1 readers, maybe... We had a really good time. I can see this as an ongoing thing...

...Ongoing straight to tomorrow (and beyond!) when Matt and I and fellow S&L leader Craig Munro (author of "Bones of the Past") are guests on the Sword and Laser podcast! That's right! My crazy voice will be broadcast for all to hear, so tune in when the episode airs. I'll be sure to post another reader update when it's live.

Look, as far as I see it, there are so many amazing authors and amazing stories here on Inkshares - and especially so for the books gathered in this S&L contest. I mean I even told Matt just before we hung up that I'm a huge fan of Amanda Orneck's "Deus Hex Machina." I think that book is so unique... Ah, I could talk your ear off all evening about my admiration for that work and for so many others, but I'd rather inform you that I...

...just posted three more chapters of "The Animal in Man". Chapter Two. Chapter Three. And Chapter Six. ....hold on... Six? Yeah. That's right. Chapters 4 and 5 are done, but being the perfectionist I am, they don't make me so happy in their current state. I was picking at them with a fine tooth comb, and I saw just way too many spots that needed changing to be consistent with the world as it's evolved throughout this project. I believe you will enjoy 2, 3, and 6 since you'll see meet some new friends, discover the fate of everyone's favorite hyena (sorry, Rick), and perhaps even catch a glimpsssse of the villain's agent (or the villain himself, or both?).

I'd like to leave you with a disclaimer as this update draws to a close: Please please please excuse any inconsistencies or bad grammatical errors you find. "The Animal in Man" is a work in progress. The scale of this project is massive, perhaps you might say Aigaion-sized. It's a lot of work, but I am excited to see it through - to get the first draft finished and then leap back in with the bloody red pen (my students know what I'm talking about!). So please, don't be so critical of the small things that don't add up. Just enjoy.

Let it be known, I also have the steel-case Metroid Prime Trilogy for Wii still sealed in factory shrink wrap. And the strategy guide for it, also sealed. ... perhaps you guys can take that instead...? (please...?) *cries*

Oh, I am totally going to steal that Super Metroid. Unlike Michael here, I am not so kind. I'll mount it to my wall like a trophy.

You have great taste, my friend. Super Metroid is possibly one of the greatest video games ever made. I wouldn't dream of stealing that from anyone's collection, unless I really hated them.

First, you're a truculent bastard. Second, that was a phenomenal write-up, nice work. :)

(Also, this is Matt, even though pretending to comment as Adam is a lot of fun...)
