ran across this on my facebook feed, a call for book reviewers and bloggers

it’s No Flinch writing, not something I do, though a good story is a good story and I still tear up at E.T.

I also tear up at Jaws, though. That shark was just doing what’s natural for a great white.

That’s a good one Joan.

Back in the early 2000s I had finished my first novel. But it wasn’t until later I read the 2nd best advice that was something like:

You finished your first novel, terrific! Now wrap it up in something, put it on the shelf and never, ever look at it again. You’re done with it.

Not having  heard this advice yet, I sent that 1st manuscript out to a few literary agents that were accepting submissions. I followed all the rules, double spacing, margins, all that stuff.

I got one of the self-addressed stamped envelopes back. The agent had written on my query letter: You’re not ready for an agent. Find a writer’s group.

My wife at the time said, rip it up, but I saved it because I appreciated that the agent had taken the time to send me that message.

Took that agent’s advice, and I still have that letter.  Probably on the shelf with that manuscript.

The advice that’s influenced me the most wasn’t about writing, and it wasn’t personally to me, but it has helped me a lot:
Pick a lane. - Lin-Manuel Miranda.
I interpreted this as: Get focused about your goal. Then find and hone your strengths that will help you achieve that goal. Address your weaknesses realistically: if your vocabulary sucks, read more; if you don’t even know where to begin, go to free workshops; if you’ve done the best you can but you’re not getting the results you want, hire editors; if you need motivation,  join writing groups.
There’s so much out of your control, it’s important to do your best with the things you *can* control.

What was the most influential piece of advise ever received about your writing?

The original draft of chapter one followed closer to a song that is still copyrighted. It featured Dr. Karl’s weapon of choice, a tar-stained claw hammer. But without permission to publish on that copyright, I felt it wiser to revert to a crow bar with the intention of getting said permission in the future. Soon as I figure out who to call...

Update: the more i research the copyright laws, the more I realize it would be easier to revise the story

I like the new excerpt. It’s my type of humor - unexpected, terrible situation for the protagonist... Soooo.... does he kill her because of it? Also, why a crowbar?

My jefe, whom I call Melon Baller, a.k.a. the Editor, says to post a few lines from Chapter 4 of Murder Happens.

But first, a big THANK YOU to everyone on this site. It’s been a terrific experience. Super appreciative for everyone I’ve met and all the support received.

I fully intend to support as many writers as possible. And I’m taking a breather from extorting pre-orders and breaking knuckles so participating authors can focus on their Launchpad entries.

Anyway, very excited about this story again, and actively working on the manuscript that I’d finished a few years back.

I always blame my day job when I hit a slump, and Melon Baller goes for my heart with, you guessed it, a shiny steel melon baller.

Ouch!

But you know that feeling when you write something, and you sit back and read it and are able to see it without your can’t-kill-your-darlings bias?

It’s like that, it’s good and creepy and the story is evolving much stronger.

Here’s an excerpt from Chapter 4 titled Oh My Darling

and so worth it. double down tomorrow night!

Wasn’t clear on that last update that it was a JUMP SCARE and that Murder Happens is still in 3rd place in the Horror Contest at this time and by no means have I conceded anything. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
