It has been five years since each of you showed your support for my novel, and for that I can never thank you enough. I have also appreciated the constant interest a lot of you have shown me over the years. It was that continued interest that helped me continue forward with this project through the years.
So, here is my update, even if it is long overdue. After five years of trying to work with the Inkshares staff to review and publish my manuscript I have decided to sever ties and pursue alternate means of publishing. Call it creative differences.
I will leave you with this. Though this is incredibly disappointing it offers me the chance to finally move forward and have a actual answer when people ask me where their book is.
Refunds will be issued soon. And if you are still interested in supporting my work, I will have details of how to do so in the early new year. New year, new opportunities.
I hope this message finds you safe and healthy in these odd times. I know that things are very out of sorts on my end, but my family and I are doing well, and making the best of a bad situation.
A lot has happened in the past year with the book. In February of 2019 I set about overhauling the original manuscript to make the overall plot and timeline more exciting from the get go. I finished that version in February of this year and sent it on back to Inkshares for review. I must say, I’m very happy with the changes. The book as a whole feels more complete and polished.
Now, that doesn’t mean it is done. Far from it.
The manuscript is in line to get reviewed by Inkshares and I’m expecting a lot of notes. Every time I go back through the book I find more ways to tighten things up. The story, in my opinion, is fun and exciting, but there is always room for improvement. This is, after all, my first novel and I’m learning how to better my writing every day.
But, with that being said, I just wanted everyone to know that we are still working hard to get this book into your hands, and into bookstores!
I also wanted to pass along a few notes for anyone who is interested. First, I updated Tainted’s page on Inkshares to include a new "back cover" description of the book. Second, I took down the old prologue, as it no longer appears that way in the new manuscript. With its removal, I included the updated introduction to the book. Not quite prologue, more of an introduction to the narrator/world. Take a moment to pop over and give it a once over, I would love to hear what you think!
Thank you for your patience and sticking with me through all of this. I really appreciate it. And I can’t wait for you to dive into Tainted!
I definitely did. I want to use your novel as an inspiration to write my own horror story. But, first I want to focus on funding for my mystery/thriller, "In Warm Blood." Surely, however, I will get to putting down my other ideas into actual stories. Your novel is a great motivation!
I know I’ve been MIA for a while, and I apologize. For those who know me, this is the busiest time of year for me, as I get the pleasure of working with the talented crew of the Knott’s Scary Farm’s production team as we bring nightmares to life. (Pretty cool pitch, right?) Even as my schedule has become less than ideal, I wanted to let everyone know that Tainted is still plugging away through the editing process. And I must say, it really is coming together nicely. I’ve spent a lot of time chiseling the story down into a lean, mean, horror machine... wait, that sounds dumb... Let’s try this. A lean, mean, rip your face off and eat it because it likes it, nightmare of a ride... ok, that’s better. Not great, but better. With that said, I’m really happy with how the story is turning out.
Before I get swept back into the raging torrent that is Knott’s Scary Farm, I wanted to share a review I received from one of Tainted’s beta readers:
First, let me say I personally am not the ideal demographic for this book. It was not written for me, a middle aged stay at home mom. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed reading it. This book is a thoughtfully written and well crafted horror fiction. It nods respectfully to the campy and well loved nostalgia of seventies horror movies. There were enough twist and turns that I got dizzy with anticipation of what could possibly be hiding around the bend. The non-linear plot line kept me reeling with curiosity. The Author writes in a way that assumes his reader is as intelligent as he is. Character developed is solid, resulting in a cast of characters that are complex and interesting. It feels very intentional that each character was giving enough substance, they could stand alone as the main in their own story line. This brings me to the way Point of View is delivered. Using a omniscience Multi character point of view which offers a more holistic and layered storytelling. I was reminded of the parable about two wolves living inside us, a good wolf and a bad wolf, the one who wins is the one we feed. The beast of Tainted are fed well, and often. I appreciate that the Author went full bore into gore and destruction, never shying away from describing scenes that make you cringe. With that said, there was plenty of personal growth and relationship drama to balance out the bat-shit crazy. I liked the added element of real life drama by including the ever present raging wildfires of California. It helped bridge the world of fantasy and reality. The end crescendos and fades in a way that is both satisfying and entices the reader with hints of exploring more of the story.
I need your help, but don’t worry, I think some of you might like a chance at what I need. I am looking for beta readers to give the manuscript for Tainted a once over. You will be some of the first people to read the story in its entirety. Exciting, I know!
If you are interested, please email me at author@pjmarshman.com.
If you would like to hold off until the manuscript is polished, I absolutely understand!
Finally, let me say thank you... Thank you for backing this passion project of mine, thank you for continuing to support me through all of this, and thank you for your patience. I want nothing more than to get this book into your hands, but I want to make sure it is perfect!
Well, it’s finally happened... I have an update, brief as it may be.
The first round of editing has begun on Tainted, and I couldn’t be more excited. I received word last week to begin trimming and tightening the story up, and have been working on it as often as I possibly can afford.
I hope you can forgive the brevity of the update, but I really must get back to it!

Pretty cool, right? I’m excited, are you excited?
I must go, but I will share again soon!
Till next time,

Three chapters down, nineteen more to go...
