Hel paced in the kitchen. “John, I need some assurance that you have not broken your deal with the Nords.”
In the garage, I was beside myself. Dad was working with the Nords? We had a crop? Que pendejo. I was in the dark on a lot of things, but I was about to be brought completely into the light.
“You have my word.”
“Your word isn’t enough.”
“My word’s always been enough.”
“There’s no such thing as betrayal in the underworld, as the saying goes.”
I couldn’t hear it, but there was a pause. I’m sure my dad sat down at the table.
“What does the Frost Giant want, Hel?”
“You need to give him some kind of assurance that the crop will be harvested on time and delivered to San Malinche. If you cannot think of a suitable sign of assurance, I have been instructed to find one.”
“All I’ve got is my herd and my boy. And without them, I don’t have anything.”
Hel looked pained. She knew what she had to do, but she was fighting it. “Don’t be limiting, John. Surely there is something else. That is the Nord cragweed growing in The Hideout.”
“What?” I said to Rocket Girl back in the garage. “What did she just say?”
Rocket Girl was grim and silent.
In the kitchen, Hel said, “I am taking your son with me back to San Malinche until the cragweed is harvested.”
"So this is the crap part of the story. No, really. It is a story of three kinds of crap. The first kind is moth crap. Mammoth crap has an interesting story on Mala-Mundial. Since most of the planet is covered in ice, the back-end deposits actually will become the earth that the moths will walk on generations from now. And it helps spread the grasses that were engineered to thrive in this sub-Siberian weather. The real problem is, there’s no flies or dung beetles to assist in that final stage of decomp. There is a saying on Mala-Mundial. In the land of the dead, nothing decays, as the saying goes. So you have to wash the dung with enzymes that remove all the bacteria and leave only dirt and grass. Consider yourself educated."
"The moth screamed. I can still remember the scream of that old mammoth. It was electric and shrill, like a rabbit; the kind of scream that a Giant Woolly Mammoth should not make."
What an incredible weekend it has been. Saturday I uploaded two new chapters to Ice Dwarves, "Kill the Beast" and "Bitter as the Wind." These two chapters introduce another key character to the saga, Hel Warg, a young girl who’s father is betrayed and executed in a very harrowing, Mala-Mundial way. She has also been "adopted" by Mala-Mundial’s crime overlord, the Frost Giant. Hel will play a big part in the adventure that is to come.
Today, I have more great news. I have uploaded the message and book trailer for Ice Dwarves. I am very excited about this trailer and how it turned out. I think it summarizes very well Mateo’s adventure and the conflict that is to come as a result of their bull mammoth being killed.

"So, I was at the brothel owner’s funeral. I was surrounded by the lowest dregs that the underworld has to offer: dealers, con men, crooks, criminals, and addicts. What kind of person attends a brothel owner’s funeral? I mean, what do you say? Hey, sorry about your pops. Do you have any escorts available after the service? Isn’t this a whole other level of commitment to your addiction? Maybe it’s time to re-evaluate your vida loca if you find yourself at your brothel owner’s funeral."
"We were survivors way down in our bones. It’s all we knew. We lived in a world that would bury you in snow one day, shoot you in the back the next, and eat you alive on the third day. Valgardt wasn’t just trying to be poetic when he said cold as the ice, hard as the rock, bitter as the wind. Remorseless as the Mala-Mundial. He was eating a full serving of that remorselessness while we all stood and gaped."
Things are going not so well on Mala-Mundial. Needs must when the devil drives, as the old saying goes, and the devil is certainly driving on Mala-Mundial. Mateo and his father have lost their bull, and Mateo’s father has lost their drug crop as well. The Dona Muertes have burned most of it. But the Nords, who buy their drug crop, arrive and stop the Dona Muertes. They execute the ones they capture. If that was not enough reason to worry, Mateo and his cyber Cerberus have had to fend off a few saber-toothed tigers trying to get at the dead mammoths. Now the story is going to turn to the execution of Valgardt, a harrowing experience for Mateo. The next two chapters should be up by Friday, and I hope you enjoy them.
I also wanted to send you a chapter lineup of Ice Dwarves to give you a taste of what is to come. Later, I will put up the chapter outlines as well.
