Prologue:
“Sir, there is a survivor from mission number A210, sir”
He signed in frustration and asked angrily “who is it?”
“Captain MccGray Baxter, sir”
He signed again, but this time it was as if he was expecting it.
“Keep stalling”
“Yes sir”
Chapter 1:
I can’t feel my legs.
I guess at this point, I hold be happy to feel the rest of my body. My memories were a blur but the more time I spent laying here in the sea of dead bodies, the more I remembered the reason of my current state. As the minutes flew by I decided to recite everything I remembered.
Name and Position: MccGray Baxter, squad captain A1
Age: 19
Last 24 hours: the first squad of each cycle was sent into the same mission. 26 squad captains. 520 soldiers. Each captain was responsible for 20 men.
Our mission was supposed to be easy. We were sent to destroy the barracks of the rebels but when we reached the location, it turned out to be a trap.
I remember the air being too thick , too quiet but the moment I knew there was something wrong I was too late and my voice was covered with the splitting sound of explosions all around me, I saw my men fall, men I was responsible for. I remember seeing some rebel around me then I saw that I barely had 100 men with me. Which was nothing in comparison with the hundred numbers of our enemy. I knew I should probably tell everyone to back up and run but instead I gave a completely different order. “Soldiers! You stand your ground, you fight them right here and right now and you will avenge our fellow friends”
It was the weirdest feeling had.
Ever since the selection, those men were all I knew. I was never close to anyone , but still. Alexander saved my life more times than I can remember. I saw him tear up into pieces. Ben spent 3 days with me in the snow and rain because I convinced him to get me extra ham at dinner when he had kitchen duty. I saw him push Nick, his boyfriend, out of the way and get shot in the head himself.
They weren’t my best friends but they were my family for 1 years and I saw them go down right before my own eyes.
I was a lion that was about to be set free, but then again, every bull feels that way as soon as he sees red and I totally saw bright clear red. I just wish I thought clearer, then I could have saved the rest but no … I became responsible for more deaths. If only …
The train of my thoughts was cut off so suddenly by a very loud thud. After a couple of nano-seconds, I realized it was a helicopter. There is a helicopter.
