Lee Goodman commented on Casters

Chapter 1: The Young Heir - A Review

Talk about a riveting way to begin a story! T.L. Wick cuts through the usual tedium seen in many fantasy novels as she “gets to the good stuff” without delay. We begin with a basic exposition of the protagonist, which is nothing new, admittedly—a rich kid with a heart of gold. However, we see cracks begin to form in that trope as the protagonist has budding thoughts dealing with their privilege, while the author plays with the idea of people in a position of power being complacent in their comfort. After being introduced to the ritzy lifestyle of the elite, we also see the “benevolent” hand of oppression presented as the Infurnals or “Furs” (beings with animal traits) are discussed as second-class citizens—right in front of them. However, there is no moment to gather your thoughts about the societal world-building as a new element is thrust into the fray, the IMPs. These dark creatures are meant to be kept at bay by the local guardians but one manages to infiltrate Vyrion, the protagonist’s, home. Make sure to give this a read; you won’t regret it!
