Greetings Gentle Readers,
I am sorry for my extended silence about my memoir, Mothering: The Game. Fear not! I have been diligently working on the book this entire time. This update will provide some good news and some complicated news about the manuscript and the Inkshares campaign.
First, the good news. I have finished the manuscript! It took me far longer than I anticipated it would but I am more than pleased with the final outcome. The theme proved a bit more tricky and it took me some time to figure out ways to involve game mechanisms into the prose that wasn’t too heavy handed. In the end, I came to a nice balance with incorporating my enjoyment of games into my love of motherhood.
The complicated news is that I have decided to refund the backers of my Inkshares campaign in order to pursue a traditional publishing contract. After finishing the manuscript, I had a select few people read it for feedback. One of my readers has extensive experience in the publishing industry and connections with several local imprints. After talking with her, I decided that I wanted to take a chance on getting my book a traditional contract for publication.
When I entered the Nerdist Video Games Contest on Inkshares, this book didn’t exist. I had a vague idea that I wanted to write a memoir, something that would be unique to my own experience as a mom. Gaming seemed the perfect connection for that since many of my personal and academic achievements have revolved around gaming in one form or another. The contest and the support from each of you for my Inkshares campaign made this book a reality and for that I am forever grateful.
The fact that I had already sold over 250 copies kept me writing when I really thought I needed to just drop this project entirely. Knowing there was an audience and interest in this story helped me push past those blocks and difficult times in the writing process. And it is because of that support that I have made the decision to take a chance on myself and on this lovely book I’ve created.
I hope your interest in the book will continue. You can follow my progress here and subscribe for updates as I take this journey down another road. You can also follow all of my geeky interests on my website and podcast, The Geek Embassy. Season Two of my original podcast, Game on Girl, is now available as well.
Thank you so much for your support.
I thought long and hard about the cover...
Should I stick with the crown of blood or should I head in a different direction? I chose a different direction. And this... is the result.
Why constellations? Why is there a crown in the sky? Why is Thom standing on grass? OK, so I don’t know why he’s standing on grass. But for the first two questions, the answers are in the book. I guess its safe to say, this cover reflects the content of the book more than the title itself. And that... makes it even more awesome. Oh, I can’t wait to see it in print! Can you?
Aside from this new cover, the content of the book is well on its way to publication. It has been sent to the media and influencers for the pre-launch marketing campaign. So, the next time you hear from me, the book will be on its way to you.
*IMPORTANT NOTE: If you ordered a paperback, log into your Inkshares account to double check your shipping address. Be sure it is the correct place you’d like the book to be sent to. If you have trouble logging in, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org for assistance.
Well, that’s about it for this short update. I hope you like the cover, as much as I and the team at Inkshares do. Until you hear from me again, have a wonderful week ahead!
