I like the idea to include DoD journal entries as chapters. Marshall’s thoughts around the benefit of knowing your DoD as a life/retirement planning tool may almost sell some readers contemplating whether they’d like to know. At times, I feel like his tone shifts away from how I’d expect his character to think/communicate in here. For instance: "If people enroll, they not only get that enticing stipend, but they can easily calculate how much money they need to save to support themselves in retirement." Seems a bit verbose and flowery for Marshall who otherwise seems more matter of fact in his thought/communication style. Curious if I’ll change my mind after reading more about him.

Interesting to see Marshall begin to live his life as a countdown — first leading up to calling the hotline and then as an true countdown to his own “day of departure.” I wonder how his outlook will develop and how other characters’ knowledge of their death days affects the way they live their lives.

Would knowing your death day turn your subconscious and conscious thoughts into an ever present countdown? I think it would for me...
