It’s science fiction, but it’s not hard science fiction. The "system" that’s in effect is more of an "on-hold" scenario. Yes, the earth has stopped spinning, but it’s more of a suspension of functions. Like daily life. This "pause" would have to linger for things to start building up to all the natural disasters that would actually happen.
A lot of this is explained later, and readers will find out its more magical in nature, thus the fantasy side of the story.
