I can’t remember the last time I read a more gripping first chapter. I’ve been reading a lot of first chapters recently and it’s a bummer when they don’t clinch it right off. Don’t I know!! Writing a first chapter is difficult. William Harms nails it.
I apologize for the wonky format above. The dialog between Mariah’s mother and Lewis is embedded in Mariah’s first person narrative. I tried to make this clear by placing Lewis’ dialog in intalics and Mariah’s mother’s has quotations. Unfortunately, these elements did not upload in the file for some reason. I don’t think it matters. It was a style decision and since it seems to now be a formatting issue, I may just get rid of it.
