      RODIN’S STATUES AT STANFORD
      On this day (February 12) in 1974, B. Gerald Cantor -- founder and chairman of a financial services and investment banking firm, as well as a philanthropist and visual-arts supporter -- donated 88 sculptures from renowned French artist Auguste Rodin -- most noted for the statue called The Thinker -- to the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. This year, Stanford University celebrates 125 years.

          "COLOR OUR COLLECTIONS" WEEK
          The week of February 1-5, libraries and museums offer the public the opportunity to color black-and-white reproductions of art, drawings and sketches from their collections. These coloring books and pages allow people to unleash their inner artists and post the results online with the social-media hashtag #‎ColorOurCollections.

          This campaign was proposed by The New York Academy of Medicine and provides a fun way for people to appreciate everything from medical diagrams to classic art to design patterns.                 Over the weekend, Los Angeles, California, was the site of a veritable “Art Fiends Weekend,” with an array of events for artists and art fans. (Which means it was an ideal weekend to order AMERICAN ART KILLERS, a ‘Great American novel’ about art and artists.)

                The 21at LA Art Show gathered art enthusiasts at the LA Convention Center (January 27–31), with a focus on showcasing modern + contemporary work. In other art news, approximately 30 museums + galleries in Southern California celebrated the 11th Annual SoCal Museums’ Free-for-All initiative, offering free admission for one day (January 30). Some “Free Museum Day” participants included: The Broad; LACMA Los Angeles County Museum of Art; MOCA | The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Natural History; and more.
