Jeremy R. Strong commented on an excerpt of Origin
This whole chapter destabilized me a bit in a good way, giving me that sense of cognitive estrangement that Darko Suvin talks about as important in SF- I think I am starting to understand the world you are painting here much better (I really liked Chapter 4). This all seems very original, and I can see now I think, why the AI’s might be mentioned in opposition to the hybrid beings that seem to be the main characters so far! I love that going fro grub is literally doing so, hahaha, genius!

A human named Joe Jibari, construction worker, disappeared while at work on the new Avarice building in the Trade District. That sounds promising, no one even looked at it. Just the typical statement was collected from his co-workers and then nothing, no leads.”Weena stands up, stretching her legs and arms. “That does sound good, whatever you think Marty,” her stomach issues a long, drawn out whine, “Let’s beat wings and grab some grubs on the way.”Martin contemplates this, “Yeah, there’s a new grub place I want to try.”Martin logs off of the computer and stands up to leave. Weena jumps up to his shoulder and sits in her usual spot. She’s not lazy, she just enjoys sitting on his shoulder, with her arm wrapped around the back of his head for support. Martin has gotten used to it.They make their way outside and into Martin’s car after which Martin starts it up and drives out of the parking lot, toward the Trade District.

This is a question that I have about all Science Fiction, including my own. In the distant future, would AI’s still be known as AI’s? I have often wondered this. In this story, for us to move forward just over 1000 years, I am curious as to what the backstory on Intelligent Machines is - were they no mergers between biological beings and synthetic ones that complicate the question of intelligence and its being known as artificial versus natural? It may be that the answer to this question very much plays into the plot and direction of the story, but I am simply intrigued! In my own novel, I choose a future where machines have merged with our biological descendents much earlier on by about 2045. I’d love to hear your thoughts on how AI develops! Really interesting read so far, thanks! - Jeremy

he’s always so polite. Why can’t the other AIs be like her? I guess then they wouldn’t be “individuals”.
