@Richard Heinz I am serious AF. It’s too bad the comment from that French/British girl requesting a private conversation was deleted, because I’m sure she would have been able to help out my prince and take the cruise with me after divulging as much personal info as possible in the process...you can still have my social and a few hundred bucks, though. You seem like an upstanding, trustworthy fellow...

Did you say Nigerian Prince? Why yes, I am interested in knowing more and helping this fine young gentlemen. For I have recently won a cruise and am looking to impart my extra tickets to a worthy individual to come with. Please reach out to me with all your information and social security number as well and I will mail you your two tickets.

A deposit of a few hundred USD is required to hold your place and let me know you are serious @Michael Haase

Anna, whatever you need, let’s talk soon. I know a Nigerian prince who has a lot of money he needs someone to look after for a short period of time, maybe a few thousand USD’s, and if you are able to hold this money for him, he will transfer that amount directly to you at your location. Interested?

I know what you mean, @Anna Willoughby. If you’ve ever tried to get feedback on a place like reddit, Inkshares is a breath of fresh air. I never would have had the guts to do half the stuff I’ve tried here without the continual encouragement the people here have given.

Edit But to answer your question, yes you’ve joined a cult.
Hair in bun all day Anna Salix · Author · edited almost 2 years ago · 6 likes
I can’t believe how positive this place is! Have I joined a cult? Should I be worried? Seriously, though...I agree with you guys. This is an awesome contest and if nothing else, it’s finally gotten me to start thinking of myself as a writer and promoting my work, instead of just occasionally flirting with Google Docs and blogger. :)

Plus, if nothing else comes of this...I have an awesome marketing case study for my portfolio now.

Yeah, I feel you there Billy. Like I am so excited for soooo many of the authors in this contest. No matter which of us ends up in that top 3, I really hope everyone keeps going to make it to Quill & beyond!

There’s a selfish part of me that can’t wait for the contest part to end — I want to root for so many of these books without feeling like I’m playing favorites regarding those three spots. When it’s simply author vs. 250/750 barrier, I have no qualms about rooting against the barrier.

Not only does the window stay open. If you cannot complete your funding by the deadline, do not despair. If your book does not reach at least the Quill goal, pre-orders are refunded, but you keep all your followers. Keep building up that base and try again.

Window stays open, Anna. Keep going! Rooting for your book to reach the publication goal.

Hair in bun all day Anna Salix · Author · added almost 3 years ago
Question about this and other contests - if I don’t win the contest, can I still keep working toward my funding goal (my deadline is 90 days, although i started with only a couple weeks left in the contest), or does losing end my funding window?
Dbyegqaz Michael Haase · Author · edited almost 3 years ago · 3 likes
This contest has exposed me to a valuable network of fellow writers. I had no idea this was here until my sister told me to enter the contest. I enjoy the prospect of staying connected somehow after the this is all over, no matter what happens. I’ve picked up quite a few books, and we can help lift each other at least up to quill. I’d like to keep track of each other and maintain friendship way beyond this contest. I’m also trying to buy a few more books whenever I can. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me. You can email me at madmrbutler at gmail.com

Thanks and I wish everyone here the best.

Hello everyone.  I’m very new here and I am having some trouble getting started.  I’m trying to enter the contest but I keep receiving an error message when I submit the information on the first entry page (working title and genre).  It doesn’t tell me what the error is and I’ve changed the title multiple times but I cannot advance beyond this.
Does anyone have any advice regarding how to fix this?

Finally got a chance to come on here and say hello. Want to thank everyone at the Nerdist for making this happen. If not for the contest I would have probably continued to find excuses to delay sending The Girl Who Blinked to anyone.

I’m here, I’m here! Thanks for tagging me, like, waaaaay down below. I’ve had a couple super busy days, but now I’m on vacation this week, so I’m hoping to get my Inkshares into high gear before I go back to the dreary day job on Tuesday the 16th. :)

I’ve got Infinity Mind up on the contest and have been bouncing around the top ten list -- was off for a bit, but back on tonight. :)

For those of you who follow John Robin, you probably got a reader update from him just now about how my space opera novel essentially landed me a marriage. :)

No. You only need to supply enough to entice readers to pre-order. Each writer is different in regards to how and when they choose to release chapters. Some base it on pre-orders, others on a schedule. I have not released anything in quite some time because I’m doing some considerable rework and I want to present my best at once.

Unfortunately, there is no way to hide content for only those who pre-order, but I hope they release a feature for this in the future.

I have a question. Am I supposed to put my entire book on inkshares chapter-by-chapter. Right now my wife is following me and she can see every chapter I post. it’s starting to feel like I’m giving the book away for free rather than enticing people to buy it. Is there some place I’m supposed to post the entire book and I only upload example chapters? Is there some other location that I put the draft.

So, I’m not sure this is the right place for this, but I’ve come to the conclusion that there is no way I’m going to be able to write, much less campaign for, my space opera by the time the contest ends. But I still want to participate/play/help.

So... I’m thinking that if you folks pitch me your book using the inkshares pitch feature, I can pick one of my favorites each week and post a write up about it on my blog. I don’t have great reach, but I figure every little bit helps.

If you’re interested, just send me your pitch, I’ll try to let you know if/when the post goes up, and hopefully you’ll get an extra preorder or two out of the deal.

I can’t believe all the positive feedback and support you all provide. Not to mention some of the incredibly creative story ideas. I’m not as confident as I was when I entered this contest. I hope I can keep up with everyone. Maybe I should start doing some push-ups or something.

I’m stoked for this. The novel I’m putting up is one I started writing years ago but set aside. I’m hoping having a deadline might be just the motivation I need to actually finish it. I’m a great starter, terrible finisher. As all 13 of my in-progress novels can attest...

Hey there everyone! SO EXCITED about this contest and to have a chance to meet/connect with so many authors. :) A week ago I didn’t even know this website was a thing, so to be here now with my book out there for people to care about - gosh it’s thrilling!

The advice here all seems great, and I’m so pumped for the mad dash that is going to be this month and early March! All the best to everyone! Can’t wait to delve into some of these AMAZING stories you’re all putting out there!

It’s so wonderful to see so many bright, new faces here!

@Sean Cox and @Anthony Karcz and any others who are eager to join the competition for a chance to publish with Nerdist, but don’t have a space opera manuscript or even story in mind — please keep in mind that we have other contests with Nerdist & Geek and Sundry planned throughout this year in the SF/F genres. Many more opportunities in store!

@Sean Cox you can also post as many drafts to the site as you want to see if any of them connect with the readers. Just because you put something up doesn’t mean you have to fund it.

I just about any idea my wife or I have up here to see if it can gain traction.

Thanks for the welcome! I’ve been sitting on a half dozen manuscripts that I keep not getting around to prepping for publication (none of which are space opera), so this will be an entirely new manuscript, and a chance to actually get off my bum and push another novel through to completion.

I had finished the first two books of a trilogy, put them up on Amazon and just couldn’t get any traction. Five star rating but very hard to get readers’ attention.

This seems like a better way to use social media, both the Inkshares site and Twitter/FB/etc., to pull a readership together and get an actual publisher behind you.

I’m excited about it. I look forward to seeing all your work.
S9gxwdko Robert Beasley · Author · edited almost 3 years ago
I’m pretty excited for this.  I’ve had a sci-fi story in mind for awhile and I’m hoping everyone enjoys what I come up with.
Cujspltc Fred G. Yost · Author · edited almost 3 years ago · 2 likes
@Anthony Karcz - I’ve got a pitch, a few short stories that could make chapters, and a rough outline. I’m hoping it won’t hurt anything to throw my hat in the ring, but I’m also here more for the practice and the chance to get to know other indie writers (especially Nerdist listeners) as opposed to winning the contest this time around.

I’m polishing a Southern Gothic Noir MS right now, and I’m trying to decide if I’m willing to set it aside to get my Space Opera completely drafted. Now that we’re a few days in, I think I might use this round to find other writers to cheer for and hope to build some goodwill for when a genre I’m more prepared for comes along.

Going in without polish is going to be hard. That being said I did exactly that. When the first Sword & Laser hit I was planning my book and about a month out from writing. I quickly whipped something up and jumped in. It was stressful, don’t expect to get much writing done when you are campaigning.

Nothing like a trial by fire to vet an idea, and as an added benefit submitting a book to Inkshares is very low risk. If your funding is not successful it returns to draft state and you can attempt to fund it again at a later date when you feel ready. You’ll retain the book’s followers and any pre-orders will be refunded. Aside from the stress associated trying to fund a book (which is completely up to you,) there is little reason not to throw a book in the mix.
Fullsizerender Anthony Karcz · Author · edited almost 3 years ago · 2 likes
Thanks for the advice everyone! I wrote the contest up for GeekDad.com and decided to participate and see what the Inkshares model has to offer (I’ve gone one round each on the Indie and self-publishing models).

Sadly, I didn’t have a Space Opera ready to go; but I have a character and plotline that I’m pretty excited about and am determined to hack out a rough draft of in the next month and a half.

I guess my biggest question is - should I even be pitching at this point? From poking around, it seems that most authors that are participating already have well-vetted manuscripts that they’re using for the contest.
162980 10150347252315626 6077063 n Joseph Terzieva · Author · edited almost 3 years ago · 7 likes
Good advice from @Joseph Asphahani . I find that Josephs are a pretty clever bunch. The contest will be a killer, but the stakes are high. Submit your book to the jaggy cliffs of traditional publishing, the ocean self-publishing, or give your all for a guaranteed publication with a top-tier support group, which is right for you? The contest is a chance of a lifetime, and I feel incredibly lucky to have been part of one.

If you can, get a team together. I had two people working for me. Be aggressive. Unless you are a wild success and can blast all the way to 750 (it has happened before,) it will be a long and challenging path. Hard as it may be, if you consider it against the other publishing options and the benefits of each, it is probably the shortest.

Work hard, but care for yourself, your well-being, take care of your family, and for God sake keep them in the loop! Don’t do this alone if you can help it. Writing can be solitary; pitching doesn’t have to be.

Hi everyone! Like a lot of folks, this is my first time doing this kind of thing.

Right now, my brain’s still kind of spinning from everything, but I just wanted to stop in and say good luck to the rest of the participants, and give thanks to the veteran players for their advice.
Picture Joseph Asphahani · Author · edited almost 3 years ago · 4 likes
@Rhett Pennell it is as @Richard Heinz says. The contest was life, ceaseless, for 45 days straight. I suppose I put in an average of 8 hours a day writing messages, timeline posts, and obsessing over strategies to get the word out (some of which paid off). You just have to blitz. And then try to keep up the pace. Also, and this goes for everyone, set a daily goal and refuse to rest until you achieve it. Mine was five. Yours could be more or less, but what I mean is that the value of having that goal every day was that it was like a sanity waterline. I could justify feeling good about my progress if I reached it, and I had some reason to point at for feeling crappy if I didn’t reach it.

By the way I am just FULL of more great advice. And I’m willing to help anyone who asks. No playing favorites. No pressure. DM me [at] BulletTime000 on twitter

Also, since it bugged out on the editing, I’ll just add a second post :(. @Joseph Terzieva I did indeed mean the last Nerdist Contest.
Picture Rick Heinz · Author · edited almost 2 years ago · 5 likes
@Rhett Pennell Well, I can answer for @Joseph Asphahani and myself: Pretty much every waking moment was spent working on SOME facet of the contest. Everything from working on covers, updates, pouring over content, and actual selling.

If nothing else, the contest forces you to get everything in gear pretty fast and really polish up everything that ’surrounds’ the book. Pitch Lines, Synopsis, etc etc...

I’ll be honest, I’m sort of vicariously looking forward to watching the contest from afar this time while I sit back and read all the entries.

Good luck everyone!

It’s been a while since I ran in a contest, but from my experience, quite a lot! When I was in, it was all consuming (sometimes to an unhealthy level.) You’re going to be your biggest pusher to get the word out about your book, but I also recommend not letting it become all consuming. It can be amazing, and also crushing. Balance is key!

Hello, folks, glad to be among you...and thanks to a number of you for following me! I’m thrilled to get in on the ground floor of this latest Nerdist contest. I thought the last one was rather tame. Especially compared to the first Sword & Laser contest. The top three were solidly in place by a wide margin. The first contest was down to the minute, unless you are talking about the last Nerdist contest. That was intense. So many entrants. I couldn’t believe how many writers it brought to the system.

@Andrew J. Ainsworth made a killer video to go along with his book in the second contest. It got the point across but also had a hint of humor that perfectly captured one of those Sarah Mclachlan pet commercials. I recommend checking it out.

I’m not sure what questions to ask yet, I guess because I don’t know what I don’t know. But I’ll happily take any advice you can give, and will probably have more questions as I get deeper into it. Not just for the contest but for building a readership in general.

As far as the first bit of advice from Joseph, happily I’m DEFINITELY capable of annoying everyone around me for a month...

Indeed, welcome! If you’re looking to find all winners from previous contests, check out this blog post.

A good start would be to follow them, their projects, and use the forum to learn from the masters! You can bring anyone into a conversation by using their name in a comment (for example, @Thaddeus Woodman ).

Best of luck!

Hello all!

I’m Joseph Terzieva one of the survivors of the first Inkshares contest along with @G. Derek Adams @JF Dubeau @Jim McDoniel @Nick Scott and Noa Gavin @Paul Inman

You can ask me questions by slapping and "at" symbol in here and typing my name. You don’t even need to be in a dark room, facing a mirror.

The secret to winning is just to be aggressive as hell. Sure, you’ll annoy everyone around you for a month or so, but listen. You’ve been a good friend to them, and they owe you. Plus, it’s your dream, and if the only thing standing between you and your dream is aggressive queries, you’re in good shape.

Also, don’t put in your description that we should read your book because you’ve wanted this since you were a kid. Sound advice from someone who’s been there. I did that. So did everyone else. Give us a reason to care about the story. Pull us in. Let us sup upon your delicious words.

I thought I’d dedicate some space in our forum for new authors coming in through the Nerdist Space Opera Contest to say "hi", meet other authors/readers, ask questions, etc...

You may find it useful to look at some of our previous contests as well; https://www.inkshares.com/our_contests
