I was walking a friend through the ordering process last Friday, and I saw that the shipping fee to Canada for one book has been dropped to $10.50. This is great news for us Canadians. I know @Thad Woodman mentioned something about the fee scaling up with larger orders, so I wonder what the exact details are.

Thanks @Thad Woodman, good to know. If you ever need non-US people to test new ideas / processes against (when they become available), I’d be happy to provide feedback :).

@Robert Batten absolutely. There are a number of possibilities to reduce shipping costs and we’ll keep a close eye on them as we scale up.

Yeah, looks like we’ll just have to target e-books for local backers, which I guess since it’s cheaper should be an easier sell. At AUD$55 for a paperback and AUD$68 for a hardcover, it effectively prices us out of selling physical copies locally.

At least during funding. Afterwards, places like the book depository will be a saviour for Australian Inkers...

Ouch. With exchange rate that is almost $30 shipping for a paperback to AUS.

Completely understand the need to cover costs and keep the business viable, but that will prove too much for most Australian buyers.

@Thad Woodman : Will Inkshares be investigating a more cost-effective long-term solution? Hopefully as you scale it will be possible to negotiate better rates from suppliers.

Will this new charge be listed for when people order the books?

Hey @Evan, no it is just for orders moving forward.

Is this retroactive for orders already placed?

Hi Everyone,

After some consideration, we’ve decided to change how we handle shipping costs.  Later today we will start:

   1) charging a small fee for domestic shipping (less than $3 for a book),
   2) charge about the same as we are currently  charging for shipments to Canada (~$15 for a book),
   3) charge slightly more for other international orders ($21 for a book),
   4) in addition, larger orders will cost slightly more based on the estimated weight of the order.

These fees help cover actual postage but still do not cover packaging costs, shipping management and inventory management.

All notices of "free domestic shipping" should be changed site-wide – please let me know if there’s any text we missed.

This was a difficult decision, but ultimately we feel it was a good one as it allows more flexibility to discount books while still being able to maintain large royalty payments for our authors.

We’ll monitor this thread and respond to any questions and concerns.
