All syndicates are open to join, but not all run themselves the same way. Each syndicate lead decides how democratically the choices they make are. Most of them put it up to a vote, usually conducted externally on a site like Goodreads: the Break the Bechdel, Right of Passage, Thriller Night, and Snarkydarksy syndicates all put it up to a majority vote. The Staff, Great Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Write Out Loud, Teen Reads, Inkshares Book Club, and Quill Brotherhood run themselves mostly democratically but without a formal vote, and I believe the syndicate leads still make the final judgment. Nomad doesn’t seem to follow any democratic process, it’s entirely up to the lead what is backed, and it has been inconsistently active in the past couple of months.
I’m only personally a member of the Bechdel Syndicate, so I could be wrong about any of the above, it’s just the general impression I’ve been given since I’ve been here. Wehn in doubt, you can always reach out to the lead of any syndicate that interests you. They’re usually quite responsive.

The general idea is that you pay $10 (I think) monthly and the head chooses a book for the group to fund. They choose based on the Syndicate support ideas, for example, if a Syndicate says they will support mystery books, the leader will select a monthly mystery book. I hope this is what you were wondering.

@Susan Hamilton Unfortunately not many of the syndicates posted into my thread, but the Forum lacks a lot of visibility and many people don’t use it.

There is no collective overview of the Syndicates. I did make a forum post about them previously, though, which you may find helpful! https://www.inkshares.com/forum_threads/promote-your-syndicate-

Hi. I’d like to learn a little more about the syndicates. I understand each is unique but is there one source of info that lists which ones are available, who runs them, how they select books (i.e., do they take suggestions or do they strictly pick their own?), do they or do they not consider books that are in active competitions, etc.?

It may be that people just need to look at each one individually, but I was curious if there was some kind of collective overview.
