@Robert Batten Thanks for the heads-up. I’ll certainly check out Scribophile.

Hi @See Gull - welcome to Inkshares! (and thank you for the comments on my prologue)

Since this discussion started, the wonderful @P.H. James has set up Critshares, an author critiquing community on Scribophile. Check out this forum thread for details - I highly recommending signing up and a bunch of us will help you out.

If, for whatever reason, you don’t want to join that group, you can DM me and I’ll have a look at your work when I have time.

@Robert Batten Hi, I’m pretty much a noob here at Inkshare. Nevertheless, I’ve got stuck straight in and have set up my project page (’https://www.inkshares.com/books/traakenholt’) with a few preview chapters.

I’m really really interested in honest feedback from all angles.

@Robert Batten  - haha, thanks! Well, if Steven Erikson is your style then I hope you feel I’ve done him justice - I think it’s fair to say his influence runs very strongly through my work.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Also, you mention Steven Erikson in your Inkshares bio, so, you rock.

Hi @Sam Fellows - I’ve added your book to my reading list, but note there are a few in my pile at the  moment, and I’m currently madly trying to polish things for the Launchpad Competition, so I won’t get to this immediately.

Hi all,

Figured I’d jump on the gravy train - I’d love to have as much feedback on my book Oak and Stone as anyone is willing to give. It’s epic fantasy for grown-ups in the style of Steven Erikson/Robert Jordan, so if that’s your cup of tea then please do read, comment, review, follow, pre-order - whatever feels right!

https://www.inkshares.com/books/oak-and-stone-a-book-of-enai

I’ll try and work my way through as many of the books linked in this thread as I can and give some feedback of my own. I’m always on the lookout for new books to follow.

Thanks

Sam

Still looking for more feedback. I also am curious as to whether or not I should post my other books or just wait on The Burned to be ready for pre-orders. I’ve noticed that western fiction hasn’t worked on inkshares and I’d like to get The Burned published, but I’m concerned my other stories will draw attention away from it if I post them.

@Matthew S. Adams DM me, I was trying to give further in put on your book but it wouldn’t send.

@Robert Batten Just sent you an invite on the site.  Group page is bare bones at the moment, but that will soon change...

@Matthew S. Adams I also did the paid membership.  It’s been worth every penny.  The things I like best about the paid membership are the ability to see reader breakdowns/statistics, and adding additional options for people to use when they critique you (ratings scales and such).  The ability to maintain more posts allows you to make multiple chapters of your novel available at all times.  Having the ability to go back and read your previous chapters makes it easier for members to give you ongoing feedback.

If you’re serious about getting feedback on your work, it’s a godsend.

I’ll try out the free and see how I feel about it and go from there.

@Matthew S. Adams - The basic account is good for getting a feel for the service. Key limitations I found were:
1. Limit on how many excerpts you could post for critique.
2. Limit on how many direct messages you could keep.
The consequences for those limits are that to post more work for critiquing, you have to delete existing. However, you can save a PDF of the critiques you have received so you don’t totally lose them. Same with direct messages- it is good to engage (even just to thank) people who provide you with critiques on the site, but you will need to delete messages from your account to keep doing that.
I used the service for 1-2 weeks and then paid for a full account.

@Robert Batten Thank you very much.  Do you know if the scribophile basic account is worth it or, to really get use from it, do you need the subscription plan?  Also, being new and everything, if I have an entire manuscript finished should I go ahead and put it all up on the project page or just put out enough to generate interest?

@Matthew S. Adams - I’ve now added The Titan in the Window to my list. Same deal as my comments in earlier post - my preference is to provide critiques using scribophile (if you have an account) or a google docs file. Let me know if a) you have a scribophile account, or b) if you don’t want me to use the google docs method.
Batten003 web400px Robert Batten · Author · edited over 1 year ago · 1 like
@P.H. James - great idea with scribophile group. If you could send me the details I’ll get in on that.

Pontus, Abigail, Catherine, Siriano - I’ve added your novels to my "to critique" list. My apologies, but it may take me a little while to get through them all, but I’ll keep chipping away at it.

I can provide critiques via scribophile if you choose to use that site. If so send me a link to your profile and I’ll get on it (PS this is my profile).

If you don’t want to use scribophile, then my preference would be to send you inline critiques using a google docs file (using track changes and comments). However, to do that I’ll need to copy your excerpts into a google doc file stored on my google account. I will only keep the file as long as you need it to gather my feedback, and then delete it when you ask me to. If any of you have issue with that process, let me know and I’ll do separate notes and just DM them to you.

Cheers,

Robbie

I am also in dire need of feedback and whatnot.  Would love to give feedback as well and am about to check out the scribophile group thing.  I’m new on the site so pardon my bumbling around when it does arise.  Feel free to DM.

@Robert Batten I followed you! I just joined the site today and am still in the process of setting everything up, but I would love to swap edits and suggestions.

@Nell Walton is next on my list. Hopefully getting to it tonight. If anyone would like to check out my stuff would be cool. Especially I had an oops and had to reupload everything. Either way I am slowly going through the people here and giving feedback.

For anyone who’s interested, I’ve just created a critiquing group for Inkshares authors on Scribophile.  I’ll be posting a formal announcement with the all the details sometime in the next few days.  Feel free to send me a PM if you have any questions before the thread goes up.

I’m going to check out Human Resources once I’m home from work so I can get some honest critique and feedback to you. I would love to hear feedback about my work, Starshine, which is also sci-fi and still in progress, as well as the one I’ve just started working on and entered into the Geek & Sundry contest, Soul Tide. There’s not a lot yet, but I only just started writing it while at work today and plan to do some work with it this weekend while recouping from wisdom teeth surgery! :)

I’m in the same boat. I don’t have a lot posted, but any kind of feedback would be much appreciated, and I’ll do my best to find some time to return the favor.
I’m still tweaking the plot and technical details of the story, so any thought’s you have I’d love to hear them.

@Luke Fellner : Quite right. My post was worded poorly - I didn’t mean to preclude other’s from looking at your work from this thread. Apologies.

@Robert Batten thank you very much, I was looking for other feedback. Don’t worry I trust you, take your time. I’m just hoping for multiple views. I look forward to your feedback. Good luck with Human Resources.

Hi Luke - I promise to look at The Burned and give you feedback :)
It is definitely on my backlog - although I admit it is taking me a little while to work through that backlog...

OMG. Nell I just watched the video you have posted against Dragon Siege - I love it     XD
Batten003 web400px Robert Batten · Author · added almost 2 years ago
I’m happy to receive both. Specific edit suggestions are probably easier as comments where you can highlight the section in question. Developmental feedback may be easier via DMs as chapter pages don’t seem to allow you to make a general comment on the chapter (unless I’ve missed something).

I’m obviously open to receiving reviews and recommendations :)

BTW: Dragon Siege is already in my "to read" pile, so definitely happy to trade feedback :)
Dragon Nell Walton · Author · added almost 2 years ago
do you prefer it in direct messages, comments, reviews or which?  I’m looking for the same thing - although I haven’t posted much yet.

Hi All,

I’m working hard on a re-write of Human Resources (the excerpts posted are the results of this process) and am *super* keen to get additional feedback on what I have posted so far - especially after the first two (I received some amazing feedback during Draftshares on those two excerpts).

I’m more than happy to return the favour and provide feedback on other writer’s work.

Quick summary of what you would be getting into : Vampires (not sparkly), zombies, near-future sci-fi (as grounded as I can make it).
Human Resources is an action / adventure tale, not horror.

I’m happy to take all feedback, from deeply technical to developmental. I’m just eager to improve my writing and the story as much as possible before I pull the trigger on a campaign.

Thanks!
