I am partial to number 5. The darkness gives the hint that we're in for a bumpy ride and the sword lets us know we're stepping into a historical period. I like Reader Writer's idea of putting the scarab on the sword, either etched in or crawling on. I'm looking forward to reading "Abomination".
The original numbers 4 and 5 are the most evocative of your "fear the monster within" motif, and of the 9th century English forest where things to "fear" really did live. If you don't want the large human overlay, take it out but leave the sword. Etch the scarab sigil onto the sword.
Ok, so on the new batch, I don't like #3 because the Title abomination blends in too much and is hard to read. #2 is a bit too murky feeling. I lean towards #4 or #1. Like others said, I'm not a fan of the red in the title. I'd say either 1 or 4 out of the existing batch, but #3 might be awesome if you change the font color on the title to make it more readable.
I'm a fan 2 and 3, I like the darkness of them, I also liked the sword/pentagrams from the original options - maybe faded into the forest? I'm guessing the beetle will at a minimum make it as "chapter heading" art?
