Thanks for the support, I just posted a new comment from my glossary of the novel. I am working on a potential cover art for the book, though my source is certainly a third party because I’m not talented enough for such things. I hope that you guys find my updates at least readable and followable and is interesting enough to share with others the excitement I have when I post and write about these things. Thanks again for the support, enjoy.
Updated some entries in my glossary section at the end of the book. In my story there are a couple distinct groups of soldiers that are mentioned; Defenders, Knights and Guardians. It is also mentioned later in the novel that the Raptor Battalion, the unit of soldiers that are focused on in the story, are considered Elite Knights.
Defenders are a type of local national guard unit. They’re trained to defend the city that they live in and are volunteers as well as a type of local law enforcement, though that is not really doesn’t play a part in the story.
Knights are the main element of the Phalanx. The Phalanx being the regular military that are composed of full time soldiers with two-four years of training, depending on their chosen career path within the Phalanx. Knights and Defenders are all provided with the same type of equipment but the main difference is similar to the differences between a National Guardsman and a regular Infantry soldier, full time versus part time.
Palace Guardians are what the name implies, they are the guards of the palace and royal family. A brigade of soldiers that are dedicated to the protection of the royal family. They are an elite force that can sometimes be handpicked from the Phalanx for displays of skill or there are some who volunteer for the service of the Royal family protection. The armor sets the Guardians from the rest of the Phalanx and Defenders. Guardians wear a full helmet, while Knights and Defenders are equipped with an open face helmet which has a left/right eye HUD for tactical purposes. I’ll move into other tech of the Knights in a different post, but I thought that I would post up about the differences in the human soldiers as it might confuse some.
In the interest of including what is brought in with the first chapter, there was a new element getting introduced with the build up of the Aerion fleet, the Knight trained for ship boarding and defense. Their training branches off of standard Knight training after two years and focuses on the actions involved with zero G combat or other actions a person might encounter in space.
I’ve seen a lot of positive response since I put it on pre-order. Thanks to my first pre-order, Seth. He’s known about this for several years and he let me know that he’s been ready for it.
If you’ve read through the four chapters I have posted, then you can tell that things are heating up between the two sides, Viol and humans. When I had originally written this, I had started in the middle of the war already instead of building up into it. I jumped with two feet into the fighting which, looking at it now, I can tell you readers, that it has served as a very good guideline for the rewrite.
I’ve done it...I’ve posted for pre-orders and I’m actually looking forward to trying to sell my novel. If you haven’t checked out at least one of the chapters, I recommend you do so. It is a draft, so there will be errors, but I aim to correct those in the final.
I think when I post over here, I’m going to set it up like: Background "glossary" type information. I’m not really sure where I can type this out and post it all, I guess I can type it out as a chapter and then post it in the drafts. I might do that later, but for now, I’m going to be posting this into the comments of the story.
If there are questions by anybody, feel free to ask as I am the most knowledgeable on the story.
Something that I like about how I wrote this is about how the humans are more technologically advanced than the "aliens". There aren’t too many novels that I’ve read where the humans out tech the enemy, but I’ve managed to balance out the tech and skill versus the numbers. With some of the battles, there are times where the humans number sixteen and the aliens are over a hundred. But given the tactics, especially early on with the Viol, the humans can turn numerical defeat into victories simply by being smarter and skilled. Unfortunately for the humans, there are tens of thousands to the humans hundred and the numbers game does weigh down on humanity. There are a couple techs and species of the Viol that I love and wish I had given to the humans, but I can’t give everything to the humans or it’ll seem like the alien scientists really suck. I’ll highlight various techs later.
So a little background information on this story. It had originally begun as a concept for a movie that myself and an old high school friend were trying to come up with back in ’02. The start of the concept was the Aerion and Urrizen, two human worlds of the same system, were at war with each other and during a campaign, the Princess Liandri and Jake Morose (name changed later), fought on opposite sides of the war, until they met and we get a standard romantic twist of them being on opposite sides. Of course we tried to toss in a twist with the idea that an alien intervention disrupts the war during a final campaign against Aerion with an additional twist that a human years ago had been genetically altered as a hybrid, and that father happened to be Jake’s dead father. My friend and I decided that I would write and he would work on the visual aspect. I started writing what we have here, though I morphed it into a slightly different version of what is posted now in my drafts. Some more story history later.
I’ve finished chapter thirty-one and I’ll be typing up the next one today. My current word count is 94k. I’m looking for a final word count near 110k. It might seem a little low, but the size from what I can tell is a normal paper back size for a sci-fi novel. I had to break book one up because of what I’ve done in my rewrite. I think that I’ll be working on maybe an origins series of comments. I realize that I’m going to have to keep a continuing update on what I’m doing with this to generate a base of readership, so for those who are following keep an eye for updates on this comment thread.
Those who are following the book, please recommend it as I want to hit fifteen followers before I offer Pre-orders. Click on recommend and make comments. Even better if you get a chance to read at least the first chapter.
I found it a challenge to present my "idea" in so few words, and honestly I think that my brief description fails to capture how in depth this novel will be. I would normally post this under a science fiction, but I had somebody read through the first chapter a year ago and comment that it really was a space opera which I didn’t even know was a viable genre aside from the listing in the TV Guide about Star Wars.
It might seem like I’m rambling a little, but I do look forward to comments that people have on this and I have a lot of background for this novel as it is the first book of a series of five, all written and just waiting for the rewrites once this first book gets published.
There can be a hundred questions brought up when introducing a new science fiction arena, and getting to know the new tech and species can be a challenge. Message me with questions, I can’t promise I know them right away, but I can promise that I will write my best answer as I have seen fit in the novel.
