@Faith A. Tbh, I don't know. Yes- thriller and mystery grosso modo sounds about right. I promis to explore more in the next few months...

@JoniDee Do you have to commit to doing it for some number of months? I wonder if there's enough thriller selection on Inkshares, but I'd be interested. Perhaps mystery and thriller? Agreed this genre needs more encouraging on Inkshares right now.

I would be keen on a thriller (non SciFi/non fantasy) syndicate. If u guys would commit and a few other join, I will gladly look into setting up such a thing.  Don't get me wrong I like SciFi, but I think thrillers needs encouraging here at this stage.

@Christopher Huang I just noticed that syndicates exist, I'll look at that too. Btw I think our genre is pretty popular in general, but just not on Inkshares yet.

I have an artist friend who did a cover for me. You could find some free public domain 20s art and even that would be better than nothing.

InkShares will do a cover for you if your book is funded. I'm still debating if I should submit mine to a mystery publisher instead, because I don't see how I can get 250 pre-orders.

@Faith A. I'm really new here, so I'm not sure how it works, but maybe forming a syndicate would be the answer? I'm not sure I'm prepared to do that just yet, though.

Meanwhile, we've got a bit of crossover with Historical Fiction. There's also the Crime genre, which is basically the same thing (probably with fewer happy endings.) When I see how small our genre is, I tell myself that there are readers and fans who don't have a book in the works, and a small sample means our books will be easier to find when browsing. If only I had an attractive cover to get their attention....

Well, you have an attractive cover. It isn't one of the automatically generated ones, is it? How'd you change it?

On a separate note, I'm also struggling with when/how to do funding. Inkshares is really hard if you don't already have an audience. Our genre doesn't seem as popular on Inkshares and I think our two are the only ones set in the 20s.

@Faith A. You're right, in a way. I think the problem may be that it's too obvious that the purpose here is exposition. If I can make the action more ... "active", maybe it won't feel like such an info-dump; more as though the action were already beginning right here, right now.

The story sounds awesome and I'm very interested in reading it, hope you can drum up enough interest! My only feedback is that the first chapter is really heavy in background details, I think if you could get it trimmed a bit down to a few paragraphs and then work in other details as you go, it'd be a much faster read.

Here we go ... the novel is essentially finished, though I think it could perhaps stand a little bit more local and historical flavour pumped in. This is the "drumming up interest" stage, so I hope interest does happen. I'm really impatient to get into the "sell pre-orders" stage, but at the same time I'm terrified that it would be jumping the gun, as it were. In the meantime, I'm setting up a Facebook page (do I hire someone for artwork, scavenge google images, or draw my own?) for the book series.... Yes, I said "series". Because "Murder at the Vet" is assuredly not going to be a one-off deal.
