I like that they're trying to keep something from us angle. It opens up a lot of room for conflict, both internal (between those who say we should listen to the aliens, and those who actively pursue to defy them..

A few possibilities jump out. Are they trying to keep us from something only accessible by ftl speeds? Are they going to lose a bet with someone else if we develop it and use it properly? Is it a taboo technology and we'll rip the fabric of the universe if we try it? Lots of possibilities there. I like it well.

"What kind of alien's are these to get in the way of our progress?" is a great question and could be a theme within the story. It is human nature to push against adversity. To the universe, is that a strength, weakness, or both?"

I definitely agree with this. perhaps this is something to explore this as a central theme, there aren't enough books to motivate one against succeeding against adversity.
