I prefer the Alternative First Chapter here. I agree with Nina Leach that this version gives more historical context and more background about Bessie’s professional career. (And sorry to say, but I didn’t know who Dorothy Dix was...)
Oh my goodness! Thank you for that sweet note, Charlie, You guys have been so patient and supportive. I wouldn’t be here with a finished draft without you :)
I couldn’t be more proud of my Mom for writing such a fun and compelling story. It has been so amazing to watch this book come together over the past few years. More than anything I have been swept off my feet by the way these characters have come to life in our own household. I remember the first time my Mom told me that Mrs. Henderson had woken her up in the middle of the night and demanded that something in the book be changed. I think that the characters are continuing to guide her and nudge the book this and that way, occasionally demanding that things really be stirred up.
As captivating as her process has been, I still can’t wait to see the finished product!!
Yes I love this new version. You pulled us in by creating a clear and intriguing atmosphere and gracefully giving us an introduction as to who Bessie is as well as a glimpse into Florence.
I prefer the alternative. It gives more context to the time period and Bessie’s professional status. She comes across as less "folksy" without losing any of her humor and charm. The sisterly advice for her eyeglasses is very funny and sets up an undertone for their relationship.
I like the alternative one. It feels less cluttered. The first chapter introduces all the main characters so beautifully and Martha isn’t one. It also gives a much better intro to Bessie.
