I’ve always loved zombies. But what I love most is the zombie survival scenario. A group of people who probably wouldn’t have anything to do with each other are now forced to work together, despite the fact that they don’t trust, and often don’t even like, each other. There is natural tension and conflict among them already before you add the Crazies/Afflicted/Infected/Cursed/Assailants outside into the mix.

I first came up with Zed years ago before an episode of Lost or The Walking Dead ever aired. I planted my survivors on the very day of the outbreak, so you see it from the beginning, with flashbacks of their "normal" lives from before Z-Day came.

Zed was originally created to be a televised serial, with each episode taking the place of one day, along with flashbacks from the characters of their past lives relating to those events. The script still collects dust, but has been converted into the novel you see here.

In Zed I have a collection of some of my personal favorite characters I’ve ever created. Hardly anyone in this series is quite who they seem, and all of them have a story to tell. Even Allen, who we see little of in this book, has a history that answers the question of what’s with the dog? Where did he get the gun from? And why did the bullet inside have his name engraved on it?
