John appears one day in Lucy’s upstairs hallway when she’s eight years old as a boy about her age and offers to help her build an elevator for her cat.

What he doesn’t tell her - at least, not right away - is that he isn’t a boy, he’s definitely not her age, and he’s not even remotely human. He’s something else: seemingly fantastical, completely natural, singular and powerful.

He does, however, like cats.
