Hi there. A little over two months have passed since the last update and a lot has happened on my end. Absolutely nothing related to the book, but my wife and I welcomed baby #2 into our lives, an awesome little girl in late April!
Needless to say, I haven’t slept much and any elements of creativity have been zapped from my brain.
However, I am about to embark on draft two reread in the next few weeks and then possibly moving to draft three.
While that happens, I will be submitting this project to the newest Nerdist contest! Let’s get ready to promote the hell out of it.
Well, many months have come and gone since my last update, but I am happy to report that as of last night, I have completed the rewrite, and draft two is now complete! I will be posting Chapter 1 now for you to peruse.
I’ve sent the book to a small beta reader group and will be awaiting feedback on the complete project. However, in the meantime, I’d love any feedback on Chapter 1.
Hope you enjoy it.
Editing draft one is just about complete. I’ve begun positioning scenes on a giant white board to allow for adding new scenes, moving some and adjusting sections where things fell apart a bit. My biggest obstacle is the following: needing to find someone willing to discuss theoretical physics with me as I develop the physical laws of the universe I’m creating. Know anyone willing to help? Maybe you? I promise to give you an extra thank in the book acknowledgements or something! And a copy of the book, naturally! Contact me to discuss. Thank you!
I conquered NaNoWriMo, I finished my first draft, I’ve reread it, prepared notes, spoken to my beta readers and am preparing to move onto Draft Two very soon! More to come ASAP.
I started this novel a long time ago in my head. Then I wrote down some notes in Evernote. Then I started writing it. I hated it. I deleted what I’d written and started again, but with more notes. Sadly, that’s where it stayed for many months. (Turns out, having a 1-year-old eats up a lot of your spare time.) That is, until early October when I saw a reminder about National Novel Writing Month. I signed up for the challenge, and here we go!
In case you’re not aware of what NaNoWriMo is, it’s a challenge to write 50,000 words between November 1 - 30. It’s a lofty goal.
Good question! I’m pretty much a superhero. By day... I’m a CRM Systems Manager at a college based in Chicago, but by night... I’m not that! Just kidding. That really is my full-time job, but that isn’t who I am.
Who I AM, is a husband and father to a 1-year-old who learned to walk just a few weeks ago (that’s a gamechanger!), an American Dingo and a bunny. I live in Denver. I work from home. I do a lot of creative things in my spare time.
I do freelance digital marketing work. Volunteer with a few Denver non-profits, and put all my creative work on my website, Ludic Works. Please check it out sometime. Currently, I’m also in the beginning of a Twitter challenge called #PoetryIn140. Follow me @mikemierendorf.
To Be There, Not Here is about a young man named James, who after an accident, discovers that he has the ability to see small tears in the fabric of the universe. Sometimes these tears are larger, but they don’t last long and they’re constantly changing where they are.
James discovers he has the ability to travel through these tears to different parallel universes. (Think multiverse theory here). He learns to help gets those who have accidentally gotten stuck in a wrong universe, back home to theirs.
Think a bit of Doctor Who, mixed with the styles of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear.
I’ve never done this before! I went to school to study journalism, graduating in 2006. I didn’t end up in journalism, however, I continue to write constantly in a lot of different areas.
BUT, I’ve never really written a lot of creative fiction before, let alone something so long. I’m hoping that the NaNoWriMo and Inkshares communities can help keep me motivated, passionate, and inspired to get this done.
I’m always open to talking with more writers and readers, so feel free to send messages. I’m intrigued by what inspires others, what helps others write and ways people stay organized. Please help me do all those things like you already do!
In advance of this thing really hitting the ground running in November, thank you. I have no idea what’s gonna happen.
