What is THE REMEMBER MAN?
Well, it’s a slasher, first and foremost. But it’s also character-driven; a deep-dive look at the people affected by a real-world masked murderer. It’s a look at trauma and fear and what it means to live with those things.
But it’s also a story of friendships forged through tragedy and the daily struggle to overcome whatever--and whoever--stands between you and a good, happy life.
Okay, cool, but what is the book about?
Yes. Right. Sorry.
A decade ago, the Remember Man murders made headlines. His propensity for the knife. His slowly rising body count. His calling-card RMEMBR engraved somewhere at the scene. The way he left one girl alive, every time. The country was riveted by the murders and the women who survived them.
But then...the killings just stopped.
The police found the body.
The Remember Man has been dead for a decade, but when RMEMBR is engraved at the scene of a new murder, four of his final girls seek to end his reign of terror for good. And in seeking him out, they uncover something larger: a serial killer’s legacy reaching out into the world.
Who are these two dummies?
We’re writers who met through our day job (in a library) and bonded over our mutual love of lots of things, like horror movies and comics and weird documentaries about people who do horrible things.
Because our jobs involve putting together library events for a wide variety of folks, we started thinking about doing some writer-specific programs. And then we started talking about our own writing lives.
Cody’s plays that have been performed across the globe. Alex’s handful of educational non-fiction titles for young readers. Naturally, we dove a bit deeper into what we write, what we’ve had published, and what we’d really like to write.
So we started thinking about our favorite stories.
Sure, we love horror films (from schlocky and wonderfully dumb to think-piece character studies), but there’s one movie in particular that stands above them all.
We both hold the original Halloween in the highest regard. The first slasher, but really it’s an exploration of ordinary (and real) people thrown into extraordinary (but still very terrifyingly real) situations.
Eventually, we started a writers group and shared our (mostly) short (mostly) scary stories. But after a year-plus working together, we realized it would be fun to write something together.
Which leads us here -- to The Remember Man and this fucked up valentine to final girls, slashers, and that shadow just outside the window...
