This short story is my way to work on the inner relations of my group of six adventurers before I use them in the larger story I have been working on. Hence the story starts off with them already being a team and on their way to meet Alanir, the red wizard.

The group consists of three men and three women, all outcasts in their own way. Aware of a growing undead presence in the lands, they have teamed up and want to do something about it. One of them is a young sorceress who has shown great power in short emotional outbursts, but can’t controll it. So they seek out a wizard to train her.

In a way this is a sidequest to a larger story, but my goal is for it to stand well on its own merit. It is my very first book but I have been busy with telling stories in pretty much any form available to me ever since I was able to talk and hold toy figures in my hands. English is not my native tongue, but I strongly favor it over my native Dutch when it comes to writing.

I chose this particular chapter as an example because I want to showcase my ability to write female characters. Something most men can’t do. It shows the three women of the group each have a distinct personality and that they have both strenghts and flaws. These are not damnsels or mary sues.

Poorly written women in action oriented stories is really something that bothers me. It also really bothers me when a story is about a group, and everyone plays second fiddle to an archetypical hero who always saves the day. Not in this group.

And regarding adventuring parties in fantasy settings, I always find it quite convenient when they somehow naturally end up being perfectly balanced in terms of skill sets and all of them being super unique in their own way. Not here, this party has blind spots.

I appreciate all constructive comments to help me become a better writer, if this book reaches the goal, I will write more books about this setting that I have developed for quite some years now. There are many stories to tell.

That’s all I have to say, I hope you will enjoy reading this chapter.
