Introduction To The Universe

In this universe, Consciousness takes place in the realm of the quantum, the universe itself is known to be of infinite size, meaning that the quilted multiverse is a known truth rather than just a hypothesized idea. Knowing these two aspects, we know there’s an infinite amount of consciousnesses that belong to the same identity, on multiple universes. For example, the consciousness I have, is the same consciousness another me from another universe has.

It goes beyond that, these same-identity consciousnesses are all in a state of quantum superposition, so it’s better to acknowledge it as one single consciousness.

However, as quantum mechanics has taught us, when one measures or observes a particle in such a state, it collapses back into a single position.

In the case of consciousness, to measure, is to experience it, as I am typing this I’m ’measuring’ my consciousness, it is collapsed into a single state, which is me, this exact me of this exact universe.

So what happens when someone in this multiverse dies? That series of quantum states that compose your consciousness are not being measured anymore. They go back into the superposition state, existing at the same time in an infinite amount of universes.

But now that this consciousness is in every other universe, its existence can have multiple outcomes, one of which is, well, working, belonging to someone.

After a consciousness reverts to a state of superposition, it immediately collapses back into one single position. This is because from all those possible outcomes, one of them involved one of the "me’s" being alive, being aware, observing its own consciousness.

Essentially, when I die, my consciousness ends up in a universe in which I didn’t.

So this is how it goes, you are alive, you are measuring the series of quantum states that compose your consciousness, it is present in one single state at the time.

You die, you stop measuring those series of quantum states, your consciousness reverts into a state of quantum superposition.

It is now everywhere on all possible universes, out of those universes, there’s is one in which whatever killed you did not happened, that you is alive, so it has the potential of measuring their consciousness, and, it does.

After existing in such a universe in which you are still alive (technically immediately), your consciousness gets measured once again, observed, so it collapses into one single state.

The transition is so immediate, the you that didn’t died won’t remember a thing about dying.

And so, look at you, you are not dead, since the universe is infinite, this process goes on forever, you are immortal.

Even if you die of old age, your consciousness will exist next in a universe in which you didn’t, somehow, the multiverse is infinite, with infinite probabilities, you could end up in one in which you are biologically immortal, there’s no escape from life.

So it is a terrifying conundrum , or lovely one, depending on how you see things.

This is the universe in which the story develops, but it is not how it develops.

This story revolves around Joanne, a very confused youngster that is trying to figure things out on their own, terrified of each moment that passes, Joanne is set to have a joyful life, one worth living, they are known to try everything, they’re really into the paranormal, trying to see if all that buzz is true and if so, willing to understand why it happens. Joanne is also into deep dreaming, they know how to induce the most vivid of dreams, constantly enjoying themselves over the realm of dreams they have learned to control. Some people think Joanne is desperate for finding a way of making life more entertaining, people say their life is probably really dull and they are pretty much obliged to find strange ways of behaving and existing.

They’re probably correct, but don’t think of it as if it was something bad, at least Joanne’s trying, and after looking at their excessively extensive list of hobbies with no relation with one another, you might realize Joanne’s life is far from dull.

Joanne realizes slowly what’s going on with their life(s)

And it’s thanks to dreaming, specifically, the sheer control and grasp they have over their dreaming.

Joanne identifies perfectly dreams from reality and remembers vividly how it feels to be in a dream, they realize how it is different from common awareness and is able to describe such experience with notable details.

While you fall asleep, you stop being aware, and it is not until you hit REM sleep that you make use of your consciousness again, you know where this is going...

Your consciousness drifts into superposition but only so slightly, because even though you are not measuring it, your consciousness is still working as if you were, existing on the universe it has existed from before you fell asleep, hence, it doesn’t have the potential of collapsing into a single state on a different universe. Think of it as if it was earthbound, while still being able to take part in different worlds.

When you start dreaming, it collapses back into a single state, the same position it was before you fell asleep, however, since there’s no immediate transition (you are still alive so your consciousness did not changed position at all), your consciousness spends a relatively long amount of time in a state of superposition, so when it collapses back, it takes some of the elements from all the other universes it existed in at the same time. This is what dreams are.

Joanne’s affinity for dreams have lead them to discover this, but only if they weren’t so naïve, it’s still a complicated topic for them to understand, and it isn’t until a particular event they realize what’s going on.

In one of the many trips Joanne takes, they wake up inside the bus without remembering what they dreamt, this is not normal in Joanne, they ALWAYS remember what they dream, they are so very confused. So they start recalling events with their friends at the bus and it starts getting fuzzy, they remember the moments before falling asleep, but they do so as if it was a dream.

They’re pretty sure it was a dream because of this, but the description of it perfectly matches the events their friends recall, it was a real thing, but Joanne remembers it as if it was a dream.

They’ve died, an accident during the trip due to the heavy rain that was falling on the mountains they were traveling through. The heavy fog and rain had forbidden the driver from realizing the end of the road, by the time she realizes such an event, the brakes get pushed in too late, the sheer amount of mud in the wheels didn’t let them work properly, they fell, crashed and died.

Weeks passes after this events but Joanne has no idea, to them, the road trip was completely successful, with a little weird twist on their dreaming experiences. Nothing else. But Joanne is a person that thinks a lot, and the memory of the past that looked like a dream became recurrent. One day, they decide to ask some other people about it, trying to figure out if everything fits well.

And this is where and when Joanne started feeling uneasy. Confused, no, terrified, terrified of their lack of understanding, all of the people they asked about the event are sure the whole road trip took place during a sunny day, extremely sunny, some recalled. But in Joanne’s memory it was raining, the bus windows were all flooded with droplets sliding down the surface in an almost horizontal fashion, the bus was going pretty fast, as they recalled.

Unlike dreams, Joanne recalled every single moment of this weird moment in a perfectly linear fashion. Because of this, they were sure it wasn’t a dream, even though it felt like one. Dreams are not linear, there’s constantly jumps on the passage of time, sometimes there isn’t even a passage of time, they don’t follow an order at all.

But this dream/memory had, by the time this was set clear in Joanne’s messy mind, it came upon them the certainty of its nature, it’s definitely a memory, based on real events that actually happened.

People say it was sunny, Joanne knows it was raining, they’re both sure of what they remember.
