The Night Runner was an emotional journey for me. Dug is based loosely on many students I have worked with over the years. He encompasses the absolute love and respect I’ve had for many of the children and young adults I’ve worked with who have developmental disabilities.

Evelyn is somewhat based on me, however, I fear she is tougher than I could ever be. The relationship between her and Donnie is based on a few rough years I had with my own son.

Ness, Bernie and Doug-they represent the best of my family and friend’s. I’ve been so lucky to have such a wonderful, ecclectic group of friends. I hope this story of love, friendship, dark humor and torture touches you in all the right places.

These characters have helped me through some very rough and lonely times, except, for The Neighboring Man. He’s been chasing me when I run at night for years, if only in my nightmares.

Be safe out there fellow runners. You never really know the people in your neighborhood.
